If you spend all your time carrying fresh water, what could you do with that time back?

If you are constantly tasked to find firewood, or spend your money on charcoal - solar cooking might help some seasons.

First try to "buy" health, then time for other tasks.

I would like to add a few points here - in case it be found useful.

1. It would be useful if domestic solar water heaters are conected into a regular electric water heater. Electric water heaters operate with thermostats.

This ensures assured hot water supply even in winter with several guests at home, because of the electrical back-up.

On an yearly basis, very little electricity will be consumed, since most of the heat input will come from the solar source.

Another advantage is that the solar water heater can have slightly lesser panel area for the same hot water tank capacity. This will reduce the cost of the solar water heater. Higher the temperature of water in the tank, higher the heat losses. It is possible to optimise here, because of the electrical back-up.

2. PV systems are generally costly. However, in specific cases, they are useful and cost-effective.

In India Solar Business is coming up to commercial level from KW level to MW. Initial invetment is high but good returns & payback is there due to benifits offered by Indian Government along with carbon credit. Basically you have to first decide the amount of investment that is possible.

I am of the opinion that if the system is developed to meet the requirement of house needs for lighting,hot water,pump and fans so that dependency on grid power can be reduced.Ofcourse it again depends on the investment.

The type of equipment needed depends on your market. Solar energy is dependant on available surface.

The country side needs water pumps, heaters, cooking ovens to save wood and some lighting.

The city people don't have much space and might not be able to use the above. There you will concentrate on larger remote electricity plants and rooftop water heaters.
