1 m3 of water has a mass of approximately 1 t

There are 1000 liters in a cubic meter and 1 liter of water has a mass of 1kg so the mass of 1 cubic meter of water is approximately 1000 kilograms or 1 metric ton.

....though the volume of 1T of water varies with temperature. See "Thermodynamic Properties of Fluids" by Mayhew & Rogers for a table that shows this, among other publications.

The obvious question is... a cubic meter of what? Chicken feathers or rocks? One is a measure of "volume" while the other is a measure of "mass".

By the way, 1 Ton is different from 1 Tonne.

In addition, there is no such thing as a Metric Ton (unlike what some websites will tell you). A Tonne is a Tonne. A Ton is a Ton, which is something entirely different to a Tonne. A Tonne (pronounced "t" with an "on" as opposed to a "t" with an "un".)

In short & phonetically, the imperial measurement is pronounced "tun" & the Metric measurement is prounced "ton".
