What are Some Uses for Crude Glycerine?

06/26/2009 2:39 AM

Good Day Everybody

Can I chemically convert glycerine into something that can be used for agricultural purposes? What chemical compound(s) would you get when reacting glycerine with ozone? Crude Glycerin is a byproduct of bio-diesel production.

Glycerine + ozone → carbon dioxide + water vapour. The reaction is exothermic.

You could always try a nitration reaction....<chuckle, splutter>

Depends on what nitration Rx you use.... Conc Nitric + conc Sulfuric and you might not be around to go to jail. You might leave with a great impact, tho. At duPont, where we made nitroglycerine, the tech that carried the vials of NG to the analytical labs claimed that if there was no air bubble (void) in the sealed vial, the NG would be relatively impact resistant. As far as I know, he retired from there.

we use it as a non-toxic control for fire ants. Just apply to the mound.

A couple of years ago, the Seguro Social (Public Medical Services) of Panama bought what they thought was glycerine from a Spanish company that apparently sourced this from a Chinese Chemical Company that sort of disappeared. They made cough syrup from it. Several people died, and others had developed severe health problems, before they got around to determining that what had actually been delivered was diethylene glycol. Since that time, diethylene glycol contamination has been found in a number of consumer products (toothpaste is one that comes to mind). It seems that the same substitution has been made on a number of occasions in other countries, with similar deadly results. I would be very, VERY sure that you are dealing with glycerine and not just something that looks and tastes like glycerine, before using it for ANYTHING.

Thank you cwarner,

We are very sure it is glycerine! But we will not attempt to make anything from it to be used by a second or third person. What we would do, just to empty the containers(20l), is to compost it. That way we get the carbon back into the ground. Thank you for the advice/warning. It could also be used for making soap which is going to be too much for own use.

Thank you again.

First check the pH of your crude glycerin. It is probably highly alkaline from the lye used in biodiesel production. You should neutralize the pH to a more neutral range such as 5 to 8. Acetic acid(vinegar) would work well for this. It can be diluted and sprayed on dirt roads to reduce the dust clouds formed when people drive down them. It can also be sprayed on soil that needs a humectant to help it hold water longer. Archer Daniel is buying up a lot of it to use in animal feed. If you use KOH in the process instead of NaOH, and neutralize with phosphoric acid, it has nutritive value as a fertilizer when applied to soil.

Hi wcfloyd,

Best advice sofar. I am using KOH as catalyst - so will neutralize with phosphoric acid and plough back (literally!)

Thank you.

Soap - Homemade Soap http://waltonfeed.com/old/old/soaphome.html

When you add the lie to the oil/fat you get soap. It's just like they use to do back home when they rendered a hog. They took the ashes and ran water through them. That made the lie. The put the lie into the rendered fat and made soap. There are all kinds of products made from glycerine. Most they are mostly soaps, hand creams, makeup, and shampoos.

Just think makeup is mostly made of dirt and fat ... kind of ironic isn't it?

Thank you jrpeck,

Yes it's world full of paradoxes. Maybe that is the real meaning of recycling-I used it, now you use it.

Thank you for the link.
