Gas Strut Calculations

07/01/2009 3:50 AM

Can any help me with the formula to work out how much force is required to lift a steel shutter. It is pivoted at the top by means of a solid bar on a bearing and needs to be pushed by hand at the bottom by a person. because of the weight gas struts are required to help with the weight and also stop it coming back down with some force. The shutter will weigh approximately 50 kilo's or 110 lbs. It will be pushed from zero to 90 degree's not straight up. Any help will be appreciated.

Why not ask a gas strut manufacturer?

Already asked the question and all they can tell me is what the total load of the strut will take in newtons. I know the force will increase closer it gets to the point of pivot. I could just get the most powerful strut but that will be a waste of money plus taking a guess at the position to place it at. most struts work within a 40 degree angle. once I have the formula it will be easy. I know I have to take the weight of the shutter plus i guess gravity and the position of the point of contact from the frame to the shutter frame.
