Challenge for The Long Weekend

07/02/2009 2:12 AM

Here's a device I found while cleaning out an old workshop. I knew what is was because I've seen it used many times. It's a very cleaver machine!

My first suggestion is a device for doing silkscreen printing.

My second suggestion is .......................

We don't have a long weekend down in this winter part of the world but

Happy 4th July and enjoy your celebration.

Looks like a marble cutting machine as I can see a marble slab below... or it etches the marble... or its just a simple wood cutter. Am not sure its just a random guess...

It's a pizza dough spreader. Does away with having to toss the pie into the air to thin it.

"Scribe" for circles of all sorts of sizes.. but mainly just one shape (since it's for circles). Antique bench mounted scribe, etc.

It's for gauging or creating flatness/consistent thickness, but, why does the whole base section rotate (look at the position of the blue box in both pictures).

This is used in formication.

Formication is the sensation of insects (especially ants) crawling on or under the skin. Formic acid is the acid that causes the stinging sensation in insect bites. This device is used to sweep ants along the newspaper, which causes them to sting the newspaper. The formic acid can then be collected from the newpaper, and later spread on the skin of a victim, often as a prank. The victim will often then scream "Don't touch me you dang sinning formicator!"

Re: Challenge for The Long Weekend

Looks like it is a device for cutting circles out of glass or ceramic sheets. The top handle rotates the lower arm, the circlular plate below the top handle screws down the cutter arm onto the glass and the lower arm with the glass cutter can be adjusted to give different diameter circles.

There doesn't seem to be any way of attaching a blade onto the lower arm so I'm assuming the cutting tool is set into the underside of this arm.

The newspaper gives something to read while someone brings the tea and more glass.

The newspaper actually says volunteers needed, so perhaps there isn't anyone to bring tea or more glass

There is a lot about the device that seems unnecessary, the adjusting screws across the front, machines disk and spring? The news paper is that a clue or hiding a clue? in the top picture, top right, there is a lever that suggests some action? the rotating arm is square, why? is something else included? a lot of questions and a bit more thought needed.

Regards JD.

It looks like the sort of thing you could use in screeding off the plaster in a mould for ceiling roses or that style of thing. But if it it was a kitchen tool and I needed to do some large plaster mould work, it is probably a good device to lump down to the workshop to do the job.

Or maybe its just the first robotic croupier in an early casino!

I would guess a circular glass cutter, but if so I can't see what purpose the friction pads/brake would serve.

Just some stream of consciousness , the handle on top doesn't seem to offer much mechanical advantage compared to lever underneath. Guesses are wheel rim trueness gauge or beer barrel top groove cleaner .

Re: Challenge for The Long Weekend

The newspaper looks like a section of continuous strip that hasn't been cut into pages yet. Does the 'thing' get used for trimming the sides of a roll of <something> coming off a printing press ? The wheel that's centred does the cutting, and the angled wheel on the handle separates the cut strip. It can't cut that bit of newspaper horizontally, but maybe the paper is just a hint. Maybe it's the kind of thing they use for making copies of Harry Potter - a continuous stream of page n & page (n+1) come of the press and needs cutting in two. Somebody with scissors finishes cutting the strips into individual pages. I dunno, they must do it somehow.

You might be onto something, skwirl. I think it's a device to checking to see if newspaper columns and comic strip panels are lined up straight.

You gave it away, it's a cleaver, bit which one?

Obviously it holds down the newspaper so the wind doesn't blow it away when the garage door is open, duh! The crank gives you more spring tension.

how are you?

Is it a thing to ream short lengths of metal or plastic pipe up to about 4" (100 mm)?

That's what I would have guessed as I have a couple circle glass cutters that have a suction cup in the middle to hold it to the piece of glass you are cutting.
