Hello, I am not the guest that started this topic, but I started another topic in the education section about the stiffness method( it was about something else though).

What I think the guest wants to know, and what I certainly want to know is if this method is used in the daily life of a structural engineer. I mean do we learn this in school only to get a better understanding of structures or is the method used in "real life" aswell. I personally think this is a very important question for students because I think we get more motivated if we learn something that real engineers use.

It forms the basis for a lot of computer programs, so yes it is important.

Much like understanding how to add, multiply, subtract before using a calculator.

These days, we don't have to deal with the matrix, it is contained within the structural design/analysis programs. We input information and the computer writes and solves the matrix. It is taught in engineering school though.
