Receptical Tester

07/16/2009 7:31 PM

Hi Guys,

i need a receptical tester to check installed recepticals. In the U.S. I usd a device by Woodward it had 3 lights and told you if L & n were reversed, no power and if the ground was connected. The problem I need it for 220/240 vac. I can not find one anywhere.

If some one has a circuit drawing I can build one if necessary.

Thanks

Farang

You ignored the tip1 when you posted, but assuming you have a BS 1363 receptacle, here are some testers. If not, you've wasted your time and mine.

1 Tip:

  • Include your country/region if needed. Some questions can only be answered "correctly" if people know where you are in the world.

Also terribly easy to build with some small neon tubes and resistors.

Exactly what are you trying to test? On a 220/240 volts receptacle you do not need to test for reversal of conductors. You only need to check for voltage.

Thanks found them on RS

I have hundreds of recepticals to test for proper hook up. These will do the job as our voltage is 220 vac

Thanks

In that case, JohnDG post #2 gets a GA from me.

In the UK, it is vitally important that the line and neutral conductors are not crossed. In a correctly-wired installation, the neutral conductor does not carry a hazardous voltage with respect to earth.

Many domestic appliances are single-pole switched and fused (i.e. in the line side only). Switching off the appliance, or removing the fuse, would leave it 'live' if line and neutral were reversed.

Not true, in fact what you say is dangerous......

In the UK for example, if someone has reversed phase and neutral, everything seems to work ok, but a short may just blow the fuse and leave the article still connected to phase as the fuse that blew was in the neutral line.

Furthermore, a missing ground could also be dangerous in th extreme!!!

These units check all connections in a very simple and good manner, I use one in my UK caravan after connecting the external mains cable to see all is OK or not!!!

To the OP (Wareagle)

In the UK you can walk into any DIY shop and buy them for around 10 UK Pounds each....

Where are you? I forgot to check to see if you specified your location...or not. Maybe someone can send you one?

Wareagle, not true! In countries with 230V 50hz power they also have grounded neutrals. Your thinking is too Americentric.

Hi Wareagle,

Please think worldwide - what you have said is potentially dangerous anywhere other than the US where you do things kinda strage......
