Hydrodynamics and Potential Flow

If I want to model a cylinder in a fluid flow, I have to use a doublet and a uniform stream, but I have heard that this can also be used to model a cylinder that is not circular in a uniform stream, but what is it that makes the cylinder circular and not oval, is it only the boundary condition that the radial velocity is 0 at r=R?

Boundary layer thickness depends on wall radius. At higher velocities there is a separation of the layer and this point can be changed by the ovality of the cylinder and how this is placed with respect to flow direction.
