Star Rating System, How Does It Work?

07/28/2009 6:08 PM

Hello all,

Can anyone tell me how the 'Star Rating' is figured out for any particular thread?

Why do some threads not get any, when others with far fewer replies or posts have the Maximum 5 Star ✰✰✰✰✰ Rating? Does the CR4 Admin vote or choose a thread to be given a 'fixed' number?....... of stars? =

The star rating is based upon a voting system (similar to good answers). Any member can vote on a blog or forums 'Star Rating' based upon how they feel about it. Threads or blogs that don't get any 'Star Ratings' just means that people didn't vote on it or in some cases (like yours), don't even know that they can! I showed where it is in a blog in this picture (circled in green):

First you have to click on "Rate This", which can be seen at the top of the green circle (in threads, it is above the question or presented discussion in the same grey/white box that you can subscribe to discussions with). You then fill in the corresponding dot to what you think the 'Star Rating' would be and click "Add Vote" button in the bottom of the drop down menu.

The number can change based upon how many people vote. It is also averaged, so if there is one person that votes 3 stars and another that votes 5 stars, the average of 4 stars shows up next to the post.

Hello Jaxy,

Appreciate your reply post, thanks.

I cannot recall how many times I have seen the 'block' of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, stars, but still it did not 'click' that I can vote with them! Thanks once again.

I gave 4... average should hang somewhere around 2.5 stars!

Indeed - if you rate again with 4 (leaving the total at 5), it'll tell you that the average is 2.5 after 2 votes (assuming no-one else has jumped in in the meantime). Seems they don't do fractional stars, and they round up.

Hi JohnDG,

It is amazing how something can be right in front of my face and I still don't see it! ☹ ⫸ DUR ⫷ me!

I wonder what a 'fraction' of a star would be............. a 'spark' perhaps?

Take care .........

Hi babybear, Another thing I've noticed you need to make use of a bit more in your posts is the link symbol (because you tend to put a lot of links in your posts)

the one with the little globe and three links.

Just highlight (select) any words:-

Click on the globe and copy and paste the URL into the box:-

Of course the link and URL can be just the same text:-
