We have a Tripple effect evoperator for evoperating and concentrating Effuluent. We are not getting the desired evoperation. the efficiencey is only about25%. Can anybody help me in improving the operation. does anybody have O&M Manual of similar operation?. Need your help

Please describe the fall-off of effectiveness over time.

This is a new plant commisioned in Dec 2008. It is observed that lot of scaling and corsion in parts of pipelines and heatexchangers ue to high flourides in the effuluent

Then the scaling and corrosion issue needs to be dealt with:

  • Is the equipment still under warranty? What comeback does the operation have on the equipment supplier and its reputation, and how will the supplier protect it?
  • Have the wetted materials been selected correctly for the current process fluids?
  • Have the process fluids changed since the original design?
  • Was the scaling/high fluoride issue available to the designers?
  • Is enough of the pressure-containing materal surviving to make continuation with this equipment worthwhile or does it need renewing with equipment in other materials?
  • Is the scaling as a result of "pushing" the plant operating conditions outside the safe operation envelope available to the design team: i.e. is the heating medium too hot/has someone turned up the voltage applied to electric heaters/etc.?
  • Etc.

If there is scaling heat transfer will decrease. So does the heat input. The efficiency in terms of energy may not change. Only the throughput will come down.

The other problem may be that evaporation will lead to accumulation of contaminants (Fluorides?) in the bottoms, which can accelerate corrosion.

L.Ramamurthy,

Let me know where is your plant placed. Added to the valuable suggestions of Pwslack and Bioiramani, I would like to ask for more details.

* What is the nature of your effluent water, in terms of type of industry, organic, inorganic contents, pH , TDS levels etc. Do you directly evaporate without neutralizing?

*Is the effluent viscous?

*You are using direct steam out put from boiler for evaporation or combined with production- possible pressure drops.

* What is your boiler fuel.

More the inputs we can sort out collectively.

Dear Mr Active member,

-The effuluent is coffee Effuluent.

- PH 7.

- TDS levels at effecct 1 - 35000

effect 2 - 100000

effect 3 - 500000 and direct discharge to solor evoperation pond.

-The effuluent is Viscous

- Steam line is provoided with Pressure regulating station.

Thanks and regards

For a similar application with tea, we used a simple shell and tube heat exchanger and a large spray pond where we arranged a grid of polypropylene shower heads. The heated effluent was sprayed down from a height of about 3 meters above the liquid level. The tea estate had considerable prevailing wind through the year. We got excellent concentration with minimal equipment and low maintenance. The pond fluid was recirculated continuously.

By covering the (separate) solar pond we could achieve an evaporation rate of about 5 ltrs/sq.mtr/normal day in South India.
