Is an Engine Calibration Management Database needed?

08/25/2009 11:53 AM

Is an Engine Calibration Management Database needed to control the proliferation of thousands of calibrations in an ECU? Or How is the release process managed internally with various groups? Traditional calibration methods use a combination of engine dyno and vehicle testing, but pressure to reduce powertrain development cost & time is driving development of advance calibration techniques. Moreover, future engines will feature variable valve actuation, that is necessary to improve fuel economy, performance, and emissions. This introduces a greater level of system complexity and greatly increases validation and calibrations.

That's controlled internally within the industry, within each company generally. The vast majority would have no need for that type of data. One of the last thing car companies want is someone from outside having access to their ECU code.

I agree that internal the OEMs need something if not already have something. I believe this is directed to the OEM level and Dealership level. good input
