youtube viewing buffer

08/29/2009 6:21 AM

When viewing a youtube clip there is a pause while the computer catches up, I am told that this is buffer problem and it can be cured? does anyone know how to cure this problem, a friend changed her carrier and previously had no problem but since changing her carrier, it keeps pausing while things catch up? the incoming lines are the same in both cases, normal telephone wiring. Do carriers have different bit rates?Optus was no problem, telecom the new carrier has problems?

Regards JD.

The problem is simply down to how fast the data can get into your PC. You can view the clip without the pauses by pausing it yourself right at the start, and waiting til the buffer fills up enough to play to the end without 'catching up' and emptying the buffer.

I believe (and I'm prepared to stand corrected) that you-tube tries to do this automatically, by calculating how long it will take to fill the buffer vs how long to play the clip, and holding back the start til there's enough buffered - but it will fail if the download rate drops much while playing.

"Do carriers have different bit rates?" - yes.

Thank you JohnDG, Optus has optic fiber, but does not go past her house, there is a short distance of normal phone wiring, that goes to her house (that area), so I speculate that a higher bit rate over a short distance of normal phone cable can be achieved?

There can be different bit rates over normal telephone wiring type connection (DSL) itself. Depends on the plan of broadband subscribed. Regards, Saji

JD

I'm not sure were you are in this wonderful country but contact westnet.com.au. I will not make this a commercial (missing active link) but these guys are great. The big boys are coming to an end and you can watch as fast as you like. Did I mention cheaper? They are on 24.7 when it comes to phone service advice. Never looked back Mate.

Good speed, Ky.

I use YouTube Downloader, you can save the clip to your hard drive and watch it later without the hiccups.
