Ford Ranger 2002 - Check Engine Light

09/11/2009 3:53 AM

Hello Folks,

I went to take a smog test and I failed it because my "check engine" light didn't turn on, mechanics say it might be just the light, the truck is in good conditions and when i turn on the car, that's the only light that doesn't turn on. my question is, How do i know for sure that is the light? and not something else?

Short of changing the bulb you would still need to access the printed board it's plugged into. Once you take the trim off surrounding the gauge cover, there should be a bunch of screws holding the plastic in place. There may be a few behind the cover and you should be able to pull the whole piece forward and turn it over. They're tiny little bulbs that twist off the board. This would be when you could test for voltage to the bulb. Since you've gotten this far, change it. If upon initial turning of the ignition switch the light doesn't come on and no voltage to bulb, you could possibly have a crack in the PC board. It's thin plastic so fixing the crack can be a b*tch but it can be done. Follow backwards from the bulb to the connector and see if the voltage appears. If it does, look for a crack on the board. Hope this bulb wasn't removed by a previous owner to turn it off. If you have the wiring schematic you could search for the colored wire in the harness and check for voltage there but it still won't tell if voltage is present at the bulb.

If you bought the vehicle secondhand and the check engine light was not working then, somebody probably removed the bulb, or blew it on a higher voltage first, to enable them to sell a car with a problem......

Did the check engine light check (before starting engine) light when you first had the vehicle?

For anyone else, always check ALL indicators (all should light with ignition on, but engine not running) before buying any vehicle.....

Something no one ever does anymore , is scan the dash board indicator lamps and gauges when you start your vehicle .

All vehicles show all lamps etc. when you turn to on , this feature is there to warn you if a lamp is burnt out . Simply turn the key to the on position and check the lamps too see if all are working. If you are not sure , read your owners manual to see what lamp is where .? Besides a burnt out lamp , the check engine lamp or " computer " whould not be recieving power and your engine whould not start.

I had a ford ranger and the lamp burned out in 10 years.
