Opportunity for Engineering Innovation

09/15/2009 12:17 PM

So here's the link:

http://www.designfax.net/enews/20090908/feature-3.asp

A new spout incorporating a check valve will increase production of harvested maple sap and extend length of time sap flows. The check valve will prevent bacterially contaminated sap from flowing back into the tree.

By extending the length of harvest, this spout is said to help mitigate the effects of Global warming on the maple syrup industry.

Who can be against that?

The point is, this is a simple but elegant engineering solution to an underappreciated but vast problem. There are 50+ million taps in use.

Its just a check valve. Incorporated into a spout.

Or is it?

No, its practical engineering insight.

Abductive, not inductive nor deductive reasoning.

Makes you think "Now why didn't I think of that?"

Lesson for us here is "What other vast but simple area in our experience could use some abductive engineering thinking?"

Why aren't we working on it?

Abduction: If you can handle symbolic logic, this is a great link:

Menzies

otherwise try Wikipedia...

Wow......ah'm impressed (why didn't I think of that!!!). My own is a much larger anti-siphon/negative pressure valve incorporating a ping pong ball with much tubing leading in. This is used when the holding tanks are full and the supply lines have to be shut off. I use negative pressure in the tanks and pressure sensors to warn me if the tanks re-pressurize (a constant early morning worry). This gizmo will also allow the drawing of sap from lower elevations which has been problematic.

As one who is about to quadruple scale his syrup production this device is certainly on my to-get list.

Thanks Milo (Menzies does have a way of putting the numbers crunch on visualization)

Every innovation, design, or technological advancement began with a thought, a notion or "let's see what happens when I do this" and the belief, optimism or dream that transforms it to reality.

"let's see what happens when I do this"

This is often followed by "no-one thought that would happen".

It hardly seems fair, all my mistakes turn into lumps of scrap metal or small craters in the ground.
