Wanted: Small Diesel Generator Set

09/17/2009 11:08 AM

Does anyone know if there is a diesel engine with or without a generator that is small enough to fit into a space approximately 10" wide, 10" high and 30" long? I have seen small gasoline/generator sets that size, but not in diesel. It's use will be in a 1/8 scale diesel locomotive.

I'd think you could find a gen set in an old diesel powered RV. But, that's just a guess. I know they do make them. Good luck.

The smallest diesel engines I have seen are a military application type. They are about the size of an 8 hp B&S engine and put out about 4+ hp I think.

I have a 6.8 Hp Petter diesel thats about 20 inches tall and 16 wide by 20 long. Its the smallest one I have so far.

There seems to be a lower size limit to mass produced mini diesel engines. They are still heavy and cost a fair amount.

Yanmar makes a single cylinder diesel that may come close to fiting your envelope. I have the chinese copy version. If you strip off the fuel tank cowling and such it comes close. It is oriented vertically so you may have to hide the cylinder head under a pressuer dome or the stack on a replica steam engine.

Yanmar used to have a horizontal pump diesel that no longer meets EPA criteria. However a few of them are still around and they are like golden hen's teeth. Scarce and in high demand by boat guys like me for building up DC gensets. Ample Power in Seattle used to sell them until Tier III EPA spec outlawed them.

That D-Star MGS sounds just what I'm looking for, but it's not available yet.

Intriguing products. Wonder what the exhaust noise is like? Would it be like a model air plane engine or have they muffled it better.

On their piston power page they make an interesting comment:

"Suffers from 'Square-Cube' laws of physics.

D-STAR believes 250 Watts is the Minimum Feasible Size

for a Heavy Fuel Generator Set."

Doesn't that beg the question why they show two products under 250 watts but only one larger.

Given it takes 746 watts to make one horse power, you realize how little power these thngs really produce. Charging up a flashlight or a cell phone I is one thing but to actually move something requires more power. The propellor motor looks like what they used on the early unmanned surveillance aircrafts that predated the Predator and Raptor military drones.

"Suffers from 'Square-Cube' laws of physics.

Typical expert opinion

Ron you did not say what the actual application of the scale model train would be. If you are looking to make it authentic in look and sound; it might be better to use an electric drive and an amplifier to duplicate the sounds of a full sized diesel locomotive.

If it is for a people ride type of thing then it obviously needs more horse power.

your 10" x 10" X 30" envelope imposes some restrictions that can best be met by using a scale model of a real engine. This unfortunately makes it time consuming to build and requires skilled technical labor. The low height precludes using any engine with a lube oil sump below the piston. Assuming you can avoid the pitfall of needing to use a Tier III engine you are still looking for something where the cylinder is essentially horizontal. Unfortunately most small utility engines are designed with a vertical cylinder orientation. The need for an oil sump precludes laying down the engine on its side unless you go with a 2 cycle. And those are noisy and smoky.

I have a small gasoline/generator; I don't know where it came from, but it looks like a model airplane engine coupled to a small generator. It is very compact and I would consider it in place of a diesel. A weed eater engine and a DC motor/generator sounds like a possible combination. I looked at a Honda 500 watt generator and it looks like it would fit if I strip away the plastic housing and relocate the fuel tank.
