Can You Use a MIG or CIG Welder to Weld Aluminium to Steel?

You cannot weld aluminum to steel. Aluminum is very difficult to weld to itself, much less a dissimilar metal.

Start with the basics. Go to Wiki and get an idea about welding. Welding only works with similar metals.

well what we were planing to do is lop the back of and then weld checker plate on to the back. any sugetions on what we should do insted?

Basically you can weld steel to steel(including "stainless" steels) and Al to itself.

Here, we can get Al diamond plate, so that might be an option. You might also bolt steel tabs onto the Al parts, then weld the tabs to the frame. Steel is much easier to weld than Al.

I don't know enough about the project to give meaningful help.

no u can not do this i would suggest using bolting methods. running some steel arms do the back then bolting the aluminium checker plate to the back of the utes tray. i am australia u are right these guys do sound funny utility sounds like some tool used.
