Guillotine Project

09/20/2009 4:35 PM

Help ,46 years old starting 2nd year BE ordinary degree. need some ideas for simple workshop project. Brief is : Any small machine or device that shows a change in motion, ie rotary to linear etc. must include 1 interference fit and 1 transition fit . !

I have made a few sketches of a Guillotine but bearing in mind that the project must be designed and entered on to 3d solid works (also new to me) the fewer working parts the better ...

about 6 weeks design 1st semester and after christmas 6 weeks to make . i have no problem in workshop practical. any info sooper . ta.

We don't do homework here.

If you have, "a few sketches of a Guillotine" that you would like to post, OK.

The object of the exercise is for you to independently conceive of, " Any small machine or device that shows a change in motion".

If you do get a job, you may not have time to consult us.

The "few sketches" of a guillotine" i refer to are minimalised examples of a working model .to show that rotational force can be converted to linear by dropping a "blade"

on true examples of guillotines the "headstock" contains too mutch design so.. the example i want to make must be repeatable so ,turn , turn, then somewhat freefall to impact ..then turn , turn , etc ..repeatable..gears are not allowed ..

Go the first mile. Post your sketches*, indicating where your critical 'fits' will be. Then we can all see that you've done something, and maybe someone will lend a hand†.

* Make sure you have .jpg or .gif files of your sketches - either scanned from paper, screen-grabbed, printed to file or whatever - on your PC, then use the icon to add it/them to a post.

† We're a pretty cynical bunch .

ok i see you feel for my imput , i am not a twit but this is the first correspondance i am at on computer ! i am a "dinonaur " this is all new to me. (scary) .

so .. i dont have a scanner , my computer is slow , due to a nazi antivirus package for kids on ...(havent found out yet how to isolate my "identity")

with the right light i could take photo of initial plan/ sketch then spend on hour figuring how to get it on to this site ... etc ...

head probing sites like "flyingpig" good ,practical, but a sexy well engineered basic example on a base of about 400 x 300 ish is difficult .

getting a blade up using rotation is no prob .but for a working model i think it should keep going .ie keep turning , chop chop ..! aargh i could go on ...

90? Why, Methuselah used to deliver the Daily Mail to me on his paper route.

Cheap shots will gain you nothing but praise and chuckles.

Re: Guillotine Project

Call me (reverse) ageist, but I have to cut you some slack for starting a degree at your age (still a yungin... but not as much a yungin as the snotty nosed kids who are your classmates).

Transition fits are very easy to achieve. Where you see them all the time in practice is in products from (insert the country you want to insult) where they actually intended to have either a clearance fit or and interference fit, and missed... so they say "ship it!"

There are good reasons for allowing a bearing to slip in its housing, or to let it slip on the shaft, etc.

If the project has mainly to do with workshop technique (as opposed to design logic) then the most obvious and perhaps simplest would be something incorporating a crankshaft. You could make a small "demonstration" engine, perhaps, and the crank main bearings could be transition fits, while the rod bearing could be a press fit, This could be simplified to a single main bearing crank pushing a slider up and down in a channel, etc. (But in 12 weeks total, you should be able to build a replica Ferrari V12!). If I were you , I'd make it as ambitious as reasonably possible, given your life constraints. When you go looking for a job, it could be an impressive thing to bring along, to show that you "get" not just the theory but the practicalities.

Sounds like it could be a fun project. If you want to get exotic, look up some of the old books on mechanical computers -- there are some fascinating linkages that involve both rotary and linear components.

Good luck... and you deserve praise for embarking on your course... especially while hobbling around on a cane.

THANK YOU "BLINK" FOR YOUR IMPUT FOR GUILLOTINE .

TIME AND COMPUTER SKILLS HAVE IMPROVED !

I HAVE DISCOVERED "SOLID WORKS" FANTASTIC . IT ENABLES ME TO VISUALISE MY IDEAS ..

GUILLOTINE IN BIN . DUE TO SAFETY ISSUES ! AND TO MAKE IT ROTATIONALLY REPETETIVE BECAME TOO COMPLICATED .

I HAVE HOWEVER COME UP WITH A FULLY FUNCTIONAL TWO CYLINDER ENGINE BLOCK WITH CRANK!

HAH !I AM ABOUT TO PRINT FINAL MANUFACTURE DRAWINGS . I CAN POST THEM HERE FOR COMMENTS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED . NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN ****

THE SPOTTY YOUNG UNS COULDNT EVEN BUILD AN AIRFIX MODEL !!!!

Hello there,

The way of the guillotine has passed,

It is best to get a vasectomy. Just have lots of frozen peas and corn to help you through the first few days. You will realize that a guillotine caused more damage than it is worth. I was a little younger and I did without the guillotine - and feel better for it.

Hope this helps your plight. Yuong'un!
