Replacing Microsoft Outlook

09/22/2009 3:32 PM

Hi all people: I want to replace my mail client (outlook) with another where I can see how to back up each folder and to retrieve it, just the same way that I can do with common files.

Any advice about a software name?

Thanks in advance.

I started using Google Apps and find it a very useful tool! It is webbased and depending on your requirements may or may not be an advantage.

I would like to ask the Guys that use/recommend Thunderbird as to what other mail programs they have used and how recently?

This is a brief history of Thunderbird.

Netscape offered a bundled internet suite, but M$ drove them out of the market.

The Mozilla Project took over the code as an open-source project. At some point in time, it became apparent that the the applications worked much better as stand alone programs than as a suite product.

The web browser continued as "Firefox" while the mail client became "Thunderbird".

Today some platforms still use a bundled application known as "Seamonkey". The Netscape code is no longer maintained.

I never use any M$ product by choice (at home). At work I am forced to use Outlook and IE.

If you are not behind a firewall or in a corporate environment where you are forced to use Windows, then try these applications (TBird and FF). You will be happy that you did.

I do not get into the monopoly politics of this from a business sense. I will leave that up to others.

Regards.

Netscape is the originator of not only Browser with HTML but also HTML language.

I remember the Netscape Vers 2 or 4 remained in courses of the html language for years.

Moreover it was the 1st as a package of browser + Mail Client. Long been in fight with IE.

Probably MS was being supported by Hi-Brass [In politics] & they got Manapoly in almost all the branches of IT.

G mail or hot mail

Keep it all backed up on someone else's server

Look closely at what you are saving & why. Both programs have what I would consider plenty of storage. Gmail has 7gig of free storage.

I generally trash 95% of my mail, I save some biz stuff long term. Occasionally I print or burn to cd something that may have legal or financial implications

You can backup Outlook. Search for a .pst file. Should be somewhere in "Documents and Setting". I back it up to server everyday.
