Dear All,

Is Insulation required on the flanges of hydrocarbon services ? we experience a severe heat loss on these flanges .

Regards

Earnest.

If it is deemed necessary to insulate the pipe then the flanges (and valves etc) should also be insulated except for hydrogen service or for hydrocarbons above their auto ignition temperature. For these duties the flanges should be left bare or with only personnel protection.

Flange insulation should be in the form of removable covers.

Flange insulation is not a definite term, because it may be means hot/cold insulation or electrical/cathodic insulation of those flanges.

• For flange insulation related to heat loss, the rate of heat losses from piping components such as flanges and valves is greater than the normal rate of heat loss in pipeline itself, and this is due to the heavy bulk materials located at these components. So, it is very essential to hot/cold insulate the flanges like as valves.

hi, I think that insulating the flanges on Hydrocarbon service can be dangerous; in case of leak you might not be able to recognize it until the leak is big. also leak check, periodic or during startups(when lines and equipments have been opened), on these flanges is impossible.

in my previuos experiences in petrochemical plants flanges were never insulated.
