2001 Chevy Pickup - Catalyic Converter

09/25/2009 9:08 AM

I need to replace one of the catalytic converters on my 2001 Chev. pick up. My local auto parts gave me a price of $433.00 for a new one. On a whim, I goggled the part, "Walker Catalytic Converter #15053, and I found several mail order outlets offering this part for anywhere from $65.00 to $95.00, plus the usual shipping charges.

My question is, "Has anyone ever had any experience with these types of mail order auto parts outlets?"

"Are the parts from places such as Amazon.com actual OEM replacements?"

Sixty five dollars is much better than $430.00, but I still don't want to waste the $65.00.

Here's what I know. I had a '91 Dodge that needed a CC. (emissions test failure)I went to the local muffler shop and had a generic CC installed. It passed emissions testing(for what it's worth) after that and I never had a problem with it. It was less than 1/2 the cost of a factory replacement.

I don't know about Web purchases. Walker is a fairly well known brand. I'd think they'd stand behind their product.

Good luck!

I've ordered many parts from JC Whitney, and have always been very happy. It's going to be an aftermarket part, not an actual OEM replacement, but its got a price tag to make up for it. 65.00 is quite a bit different than 433.00. I don't have any experience with any other mail order places other than JC Whitney, so I can't comment on Amazon and the rest.

To answer your question about them being the same as the OE converter, the answer is NO. They are not the same. A 2001 pickup cat is way different than a converter from a pre 1996 = pre OBD2 vehicle. It is not good to replace only one cat, since that will get the exhaust flow out of balance, which will get the engine fuel control all out of whack. Walker does make a cat that will work on this vehicle, although it will not last near as long as an original equipment cat will. The reason that the aftermarket cats are cheaper than the OE cat is, is because the aftermarket cat does not have as large of a substrate brick, & there are not as much precious metals in the aftermarket cat as there is in the OE cat.

Now, on a vehicle this new, my question is, why is the cat bad? Most times the reason that a cat lives a short life is because of a dirty engine that is feeding it. The reason that most cats die is from either being overheaterd, sulphur poisoning, or phosphorous poising. The sulphur comes from the gasoline that is burned in the engine, and many times using cheap cut rate gasoline will find the sulphur. The phosphorus comes from motor oil. Using the wrong kind of oil, or changing the oil too frequently are the two most common reasons for phosphorous poisoning. Many times the oil that is used at quick lubes is not the correct oil for many of the cars that they service. Oil technology is way more complicated than most people realise.

Before you replace a cat, make sure that all of the oxygen sensors are working properly, and make sure that the engine is in proper fuel control. If this is not done, any cat that is put on the vehicle will not last very long.

There are several kinds of cats. The amount you pay for a cat depends upon how much catalyst material is inside. OEM units must last 50K by federal law, but aftermarket cats are not required to meet any standard. Now this does not mean they will not work properly, it is that they will not last as long.

The federal emission warranty on vehicles 96 and newer is 8 years- 80,000 miles. Aftermarket cats range up to half of that. Califormia has their own emissions warrenty

If true, then he can buy about 8 of the cheap ones before he has given out more money.

I would go for the cheap one.....

I agree with Andy but I'd get two cheap ones and sell the other...
