09/26/2009 4:50 AM

What is the correct installation of window type air conditioning unit in terms of its height from the floor?

and where can I find different catalogues for this window type?

Open window, insert AC unit, close window before AC unit falls out onto your dog. Height from floor is not usually an issue as you can adjust the vanes to blow upwards, although the higher the better. DO NOT INSTALL IN UPPER WINDOW SECTION! Unit must be set onto window sill.

Whatever you do, DON'T READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!! That would make it too easy.

not so smart is right! The correct height from the floor is the bottom of the window.

Gets up, walks down hall muttering to self....................where do they come from????? Who turns them loose with a computer???????????????????

Cold air from AC, being heavy tends to go down and hot air from people and surrounding goes up. To aid this convectional flow, it is better the AC unit is installed at 2/3 height from the floor. This near laminar stream of flow would happen only if there is no fan in the room. If the fan also required any height should be ok. Closer to floor tends to pick more floating dusts and block the intake filter faster.

Does,"the AC unit is installed at 2/3 height from the floor" mean that if I have a nine foot ceiling that the AC unit should be 6 feet from the floor?

Main concerns: (a) Unit is secured and supported properly so it doesn't fall on your dog,

(b) Unit is properly pitched so water runs to outside, not inside,

(3) That one has a strong back and weak mind when you disregard instructions about having two people to lift it . Seriously, some of these things are really heavy and they are not balanced, the compressor is mounted off center and weighs as much as a small locomotive. So if you insist on doing it solo(i always do that, but like an old carpenter told me when he observed me stripping a concrete form, "if you're going to be dumb, you gotta be tough"), rehearse your lift path and try lifting it a little bit to determine the center of gravity.

As far as height, the last one I installed was in a cut- out in wall at 8' to center, works great because of the remote control, and as stated in previous replies, heavy cool air down, light warm air up. Does well at cooling large room with high ceilings with out air directly blowing on anyone.

Great! The idea of using the generator will hopefully solve my problem with the extension cord pulling out of the wall when I get more than a few blocks from home.

AS you can see the unit is sloped to drain outside and if your dog is below where it can hit him there is a bigger worry. he might get run over. Ya gotta love dem recoil start thingys, dey sure eliminate a lot of extension cords.

Seems like you have a (horizontal) WAC so need a sash window in which to install it (but you presently only have slider windows...). You have several choices it seems:

  1. Worst: Install a (single-/double-hung sash) window as planned.
  2. Better: Simply make a framed AC opening (no sash, no glass) anywhere reachable on any exterior wall (preferably a shaded wall) - usually a hired job...requiring permit...same as window installation.
  3. Even better (and much easier where possible): Take the AC back and buy a (slightly more expensive "vertical-type" window AC unit suitable for slider windows (take measurements along when purchasing).
  4. Possibly even better: return the AC and purchase a stand-up/rolling AC floor unit (with flexible/expandable duct that reaches and interfaces in any window opening...while allowing the AC unit to "roam" freely to the "best" or most suitable room location.

Note: BE aware that installing a "non-standard" window type in any dwelling is, as likely as not, apt to devalue the house somewhat.

Best place for catalog(ue) is local home centers; or let your handyman/contactor do the searcing and procuring.
