Suggestions for Master's Degree.

09/27/2009 3:13 PM

I'm looking for suggestions on what would be a good area in which to get a master's degree to supplement a BS in ME? Something that would broaden my career potential. I'm currently thinking that Materials Science would be a good fit. Opinions? I'm not sure that getting a masters in ME would be that beneficial. I know this is extremely broad and difficult to answer. I'm just fishing for ideas. Thanks. Conor

My view is that getting a job and some real world experience would do infinitely more to broaden your career potential.
This assumes you are still in further eduacation...If this is wrong, don't blame me, as you didn't give us any decent information....
Maybe a degree in English language would improve your communiction skills?

Currently a junior in ME. I've seen numerous engineers get stuck in a very narrowly focused career. That's why I think it is necessary to get a masters in something to broaden my potential.

After you get some on the job "apprenticeship to cement the book learning in your engineering, an MBA will help you integrate your engineering practice into the bloody dollars and cents culture of the managers in acctg and finance...

I would sincerely ask you to get afew years experience before masters , so that you can make informed judgement about what is presented.

Just like the cat said...

Thank you. I'm not looking to make a lot of money. I only want to pursue something that I find interesting. An MBA sounds very dull.

If the mba is accounting and finance concentration, it will be worse than dull.

If however it is focused on organizational effectiveness, organizational design, design thinking and ethics, it is way more fun than just doing calculations.

Many MBA schools are trying to integrate 'design thinking' into their programs.

CWRU comes to mind

There are many possibilities that might work well for you. An allied engineering discipline that you may find of interest, such as civil, electrical, or chemical? As already mentioned, some on-the-job or internship experience might be suggestive. Also consider a humanities aspect, such as English or philosophy or art. Think Santiago Calatrava or Frank Gehry, for instance!

I love your attitude of seeking interest and other rewards over monetary alone. In that regard, let me share a saying: One who works with the hands is a laborer; one who works with the hands and the head is a craftsperson; one who works with the hands and the head and the heart is an artist.

Go for it!
