why density of ice is lesser than water?

Sounds like homework! The answer is not what you think. Ice floats! Does this make it more or less dense than water? Why? Any change in the structure or MASS? If you freeze water in a tight container, what happens?

Ice actually is less dense than liquid water. The molecules line up as they crystallize and cause a slight swelling in volume. More volumetric area vs. same weight = less density.

I tried not to be so direct since it sounds like homework. We don't do homework, but we do lead them in the right direction.
