Whats the basic difference between core and pair cables? what is application for them?

mainly "pair" cables are assigned color codes and terminated as assigned at one end to other. where as cores are the basically cables with single indentity and can be terminated as reqd.

also core are used for power cables as the cross section is higher and pairs are used for signals and data.
