I'm in upper Michigan, it gets below 0. No one will be in the cottage all winter. I plan to blow the water pipes and antifreeze the traps.

If you need to do all that, then I'd guess lifting the pump is a good idea, although if its more than about 6foot down I'd think it would be ok. Heck...you must have a better idea than a cat in the uk!

flush the tank with fresh water to get it clean. If you can drain it be best also the riser from it. Use the same antifreeze that your useing for the drain traps. Cover pump and pump some down the line. Insure water turn off so it doesn't run and dilute it.

Still insufficient info. Ozzb is correct if your pump is pulling water from a tank, then by putting antifreeze in the tank and running it through the pump, your pump is now protected; however, if your pump pulls directly from your well line, then this will not winterize your pump. My pump is mounted to the well line, but I installed a bleed valve prior to the pump and shut off prior to that. I shut off my supply line, then bleed the water from the line which includes the pump. I left my place in -25F for three weeks (in Pacific NW) and all was fine. So - it depends on your configuration. If you can't isolate the pump and get it flushed with antifreeze I would lift it out to be safe, even if it's six feet down. We have six foot freeze level in the mountains in Pac NW, and I'd assume in parts of your state you might also, and don't beleive the building regs for freeze levels, they are averages!
