All electric vehicles

10/03/2009 11:30 AM

Gasoline taxes go to repair our highways. What happens when all electric vehicles hit the road?

Don't worry, government's ability to find novel ways to extract money from your pocket knows no bounds.

There are already thousands of all electric vehicles on the road, with a few, like the Toyota RAV4 EV having been manufactured, but most having been converted from ICE vehicles.

The growth in electric cars (especially all electric as opposed to plug-in hybrids, which will show up in much greater numbers) will be relatively slow, but at the point when it is perceived that revenue is dropping, then perhaps a tax based on mileage driven between emission inspections (for PHEVs) or tag renewals, etc. will serve the same purpose as the gasoline tax. Generally, the governments will know you have an electric vehicle and will know how far you have driven it, so will be able to collect appropriate(?) taxes.

Yep. Don't worry, all the governments will quickly find a way to tax electricity. The excuse will surely be to encourage people to spend less. Spend less energy, not money, of course.

Easy, they will find another way to tax your vehicle ( higher license fee, maybe tax the electricity you use to charge the batteries, I'm sure they will find SOMETHING.

Don't expect your next EV to throw too much gravil off the asphalt now. And whatever the energy source for your batts will be there will be ways to tax it. Have no fear my son.

Highway engineers estimate over 95% of the wear and damage to our roads is caused by TRUCKS. (Light Duty thin asphalt roads excepted.) Declining taxes from gasoline sales will be supplanted by taxes levied on electric vehicles is some as yet undetermined politically arranged 'compromise.'

Until we really increase road use tax on TRUCKS to reflect the real cost of their damage to roads, very high repair costs will rise even more. We MUST get more freight onto railroads--both old and NEW rail roads.

They will tax electricity but so far there is not to many charging stations at least in California. I think it is a good idea if you can get the weight down on batteries and I would want to have a backup system. Then used solar cells to charge during sunlight hours so you do not have to use the charging station so much.
