What would be the best suggestion to grind 5 to 8 inch discs 1/4" to 3/8" thick x removing .060" total stock????????? set up - amount per pass -material would be HR1045/50 -A36 plate off the shelf. through feed operation.

thank you

Hello GRNDING,

Well, hmmm - for one thing, reducing the thickness from 1/4" to 3/8" is not possible seeing that 3/8" is greater than 1/4". Did you mean 3/16"?

If you mean however, to remove 0.06" from either a 1/4" or 3/8" thick plate, wouldn't it be easier to buy the exact thickness you require in the first place?

Grinding is likely to be a rather slow process for removing the given thickness of material. You might want to remove about 0.055 by surface milling, and then grind the remainder to the specification for finished thickness.

Blanchard grinder. Just google blanchard grinder. Magnetic table.

If its plate shouldn't move from stresses from your removal.

This is Toolmaker. I agree with Milo in that a blanchard grinder will remove the needed stock even faster than milling. Look them up to verify.

I've used these grinders on occasion and they will make your eyes water with speed and their accuracy will definitely hold your tolerances. We have ground to +/- .0001" with a Blanchard.

A A-36 aluminum oxide wheel will do the trick for you. The grain size and structure will depend on the surface roughness you require as well as quantities to grind. As the previous post directed check with Norton. Now they are Saint Gobain. They will be a big help.

Google Norton abrasives, I'm sure they would like the opportunity to quote you the proper equipment.
