Confused (It Doesn't Take Much!)

10/06/2009 9:48 PM

Is there a user's guide to this site? I'm still confused trying to navigate it.

What are you having trouble with, specifically?

See below, 10-8-09, #5 I think. Babybear made a good and useful reply, some of which I'll be trying shortly.

If you have something additional, I would appreciate it. Even if it's aiming me to information that is on the site that I may not have found.

Hi lynlynch,

You are right of course!

Hi Lehman57,

Quite a lot of what the site is about and the different sections for instance are listed on the right side of the screen.

If you want to ask a question like you have, just follow the on screen advice from the dialogue window.

Can you tell me what you are having problems with please?

I know I do and can get frustrated with the search Utilities on the site, but that is probably my own fault. You did not say specifically what you have trouble with.

take care

PS. You can alway write to Admin and ask anything at all you know?

When I asked, it was almost everything! I guess the confusion has settled down a bit. When I click on a new comment, it goes to it OK; but going back to check the other comments has not been smooth. I guess their order and placement hasn't sunk in yet. How to return to the "new comments" screen seems to be my trouble spot; probably stemming from the same confusion is wondering whether I saw them all. My dial-up Internet connection doesn't help any!

Hi Lehman57,

I understand all you say, and it can be frustrating, just like finding your way round any unfamiliar site really?

Comments by default are not chronological. So post #20 may be after or before its expected place, which is after post #19.

To alter anything to do with the way the posts display, go to your profile.

Profile > Edit Profile for Lehman57 > Customize CR4 > Comment format >

You have two choices from the drop down menu:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

1) Indented / nested by replies. Save > Or:

2) Flat chronological. Save.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Choose > Off topic comments >

You have two choices from the drop down menu

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

1) I would like off topic comments to be 'minimized'. Save > Or:

2) I want off topic comments to appear like any other comment. > Save.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Change one field only, and see what happens to any thread to which you post.

If you do not 'save', you can go to your profile again and alter anything at any time, remember: click save. OK

The choices you have are either the default or the drop down menu alternative, OK?

I have copied and pasted an outline of the fields below to give some idea of the order they are in. The choices I mention above only, will change the way the posts appear and, may make them easier to follow, and find.

comment. This is only providing the default value; you will be able to change it each time
you post a new comment. Default to 'Subscribe' - I'll want to be notified of new comments Default to 'Don't Subscribe' - I'll manually subscribe when I want to
Limit Subscribed Discussion Alerts Determines how many "new comment to subscribed discussion" alert emails will be sent. One alert per discussion - I want to know when each discussion has a new comment Limit to one alert between visits - I'll check all of my subscriptions when I visit Do not email - I'll check my subscriptions when I visit
Limit Private Mail Message Alerts Determines when "new private mail message" alert emails will be sent. Alert me for every private mail message I receive Limit to one alert between visits - I'll check my mail messages when I visit Do not email - I'll check my mail messages when I visit

I hope this helps.

Take care.

Is it GlobalSpec or CR4 that you're having problems with?

Hi Lehman57,

There is the stuff lynlych mentioned which will help, as those bits list the details of what is where and how 2's.

And I am glad if what I posted can help in some way.

I think navigating and finding whatever post you are looking for easier if you change "Indented / nested by replies", > to "Flat cronological".

Take care.

There is Ask question which you just did, Start a discussion, Search forum or CR4, CR4 sections are topics that are grouped by subject, Site Indices with CR4 FAQ and profile click your name and you can from there check mail and look at all the groups you are subscribed to. There is more but this will get you started. I had the same problem when I joined but after a while you get the hang of it.
