CAMRY STEREO

10/17/2009 12:32 PM

I just bought an 05 Camry with a 16860 radio. I have taken out the radio from the dashboard to see whether it has the red-black jack (similar to household stereo's audio-video).

I was hoping to connect my sub-woofers and amp but there are no jacks. Is it possible to add these items. If not, are there other alternative bass-increasing configurations out there?

Someone like (NOT AN ENDORSEMENT)

surely has whatever you need.

Just remember, whenever one of those loud, obnoxious SOB's pulls up next to me at a stop light it is ALL I can do to keep from putting half a clip of 10mm rounds into the engine compartment to silence the rude, obnoxious noise. Oh, intrusive fits, too. And, I'm sure I'm not alone in my raging hatred of rude people such as described above. I hope you aren't one of those.

Cheers

Thanks for the link.

I am definately not one of those SOB's. To have a higher ratio of the sound dedicated to bass means I don't need to have it as loud.

Some music is better appreciated with well-defined frequency difference on the spectrum of bass. This is analogous to how trumpets, flutes and pianos are used to express the song by hitting different notes.

Thanks again.

Nice pics. While you have the radio out, write down all the identifying serial and model numbers, in case you ever need them for unlocking the radio codes. Of course, a good electronics store can boost your stereo to whatever you want.

To add your aftermarket amplifiers all you need is a a $15 USD part called a HI-LOW adapter. You can pick these adapters up at any stereo shop.I personally like the Rocford Fosgates adapters because they have a built in remote output but you could just tie the remote into the ignition at the back of the radio (make sure you fuse it). The salesman may try to sell you a JL audio clean sweep or Audison Bit-1 but unless you are anal about your sound quality you don't need to spend the 500-1000 USD extra for it.

To install the HI-LOw adapter you need to remove the factory radio and locate the speaker wires. These wires are usually twisted together and on most cars there are only 4 of them for the four factory speakers. You can also find them by metering the two wires (positive and negative) and once you find them they meter between 1-8 ohms. 90% of the time they are 4 ohms. Cut the wires and using a low voltage battery (9v or 12-14v drill battery) "pop" the speakers by placing one wire on the positive terminal and tapping the other wire on the negative. This will cause the speaker to "pop" and tell you if its the front/rear and left/right speaker. MAKE SURE YOU METER THE WIRES FIRST OR YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE OR YOURSELF!!!!! Then splice in the HI-Low adapters. Each Hi-Low adapter gives you only two rca outputs to run to your amps so if you are powering all four speakers and a subwoofer you are going to need 2 HI-LOW's and 2 y adapters to split the rear output to 4 rca's out.

One last thing, if you dont find any wires behind the radio that meter 4 ohms then the car has a factory amplifier. In this case you need to locate the amplifer. The amplifer will have an input and output side. Repeat the above steps to find the output side ( the side showing the 4 ohm) and splice the HI-LOW adapters in
