Runtime error!

10/17/2009 5:56 PM

I've been trying to reinstall my Adobe Reader 9.0 and the following message keep coming up every time I click on the 'Agree' button.

'Runtime error!

Program: C:\...\Reader 9.0\AcroRd32.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.'

I had it downloaded a few times and in frustration completely un-installed it and then reinstalled it with no success.

Any idea?

UPGRADE to Linux and try Evince. You can even multiboot to be able to run Win programms not YET ported

I'm getting the same error messsages when trying to view pdf files in Acrobat. This happens on my windows XP Pro machine. I don't know if it is coincidence but my anti virus software subscription is coming up for renewal. Same thing happened last year just before renewal time.

It's because you didn't upgrade to Vista

The bug only effects XP and earlier versions

Don't worry be happy I'll send you the right stuff...

You're funny.

Like I said before the problem was hat i wasn't logged in as an administrator and did not have the full privilege to install and uninstall files.

It was silly of me I know and I did not realise it until my PC told me when I tried to uninstall some other files at the time.

Possibly it was not a completely successful deletion, try using this free .pdf reader while we fix you up, Foxit , many have found they like the small very efficient reader and abandon the quirky security prone Adobe reader 9.

Try then this and this to completely remove Adobe reader before using it again.

Thanx for the suggestion however, before I do it, the same message cropped up again just as I finished writing a DVD a little while ago and only to realise that the DVD is now cannot even be viewed, useless.

The message came up this time: -

"Runtime error!

Program:...\Mediahub.exe

R6025

- pure virtual function call"

I forgot to mention that both these messages came up in a window - 'Microsoft's Visual C++ Runtime Library' - does this ring a bell?

Are you using a 64 bit Vista browser? I believe they have had problems loading on certain Vista systems.

No, I'm using XP Pro but I caught a virus 2 days earlier and had to look for the culprit file in 'safe mode' it was a file that had a numeric '01787124' name.

It took over the screen after boot up and masked everything on it except the taskbar. It also disabled everything and kept prompting to buy a shown program or activate it if I had it already. Its screen name was 'Secure Tool' and it looked like it had itself installed even however, it was not visible in Control Panel to be removed.

Re: Runtime error!

Hi all,

I resolved the problem however, I profoundly feel very stupid and compelled to apologise for what happened.

A few days ago I picked up a bug that suddenly crippled my laptop and by the time I managed to fix it I had to log in as an administrator. When things got sorted I logged out and forgot to log back to fix up this issue.

The restriction cropped up when I tried to remove a file that required administrator rights.

Thanx for your effort.

Glad you got that straightened out, now make sure you run your security software several times to clean up any virus' or malware.

Re: Runtime error!

Yeah, I did it twice with Avast free version both thorough and standard and the bastard let me down.

I have no choice butto install Mcafee back again because that has a Spyware feature whereas I noticed Avast doesn't, at least I couldn't find it under that name and it's free version doesn't have auto-scan feature either.

Yet, GMER earlier today showed me there is a hidden file: ---

Type: Service.......system32\drivers\gaopdxkkwntymp.sys [***hidden***] Value: [SYSTEM]gaopdxserv.sys --- high lighted in red and Avast ignored it at each scan.

I would post it if I new how to do it, just to let the curious ones to see what its all about.

gaopdxserv.sys

This is a rootkit! If you know anything about rootkits; you're a minority of computer users, you'd not be surprised to know few anti-virus programs deal directly with rootkit prevention. There are stand alone programs such as GMER also other more specific trouble shooters but of course they bear the warning you may render your computer to a door stop if not knowing what you're doing.

Everyone should once the system is clean or when new use Windows Process Explorer to create a baseline of the running processes used by the computer when it's operating correctly. If for some reason the computer starts behaving poorly, run Process Explorer again and compare scans. Any differences will be good places to start looking for malware.

I had the same problem last week The virus takes over Windows Explorer and prevent you from opening legitimate applications. Norton calls it Win32Pinfi. It stays hidden even under DOS mode. It has "roots" in registry. The virus proceeds slowly maybe in a matter of weeks. Very difficult to delete. I had to format my hard disk and remove all partitions (raw Formatting) because if you format only one one partition it returns later. It copies itself to CD and DVD. So be warned. Now I do a virus check 5 times a day.

I formatted my hard disk yesterday and after several virus checks it seems to have vanished. I hope. Look for a directory (hidden) called RECYCLER, if present in all your partitions, in DOS mode. This is not a Windows directory, I believe. I suspect System Volume Information also

I was learning how to program PIC microcontrollers, now I have to learn how to deprogram Windows.LOL

I thought svhost was a Windows application. It is always there when I run Task Manager. And If I stop it, (end process) it comes back.

Thank you for directing me to site.

I just had Mcafee finished scanning and it also found a 'potentially unwanted program' - Generic PUP.z!o -

I don't know if it's referring to the same file I mentioned before but now I had it removed anyway.

I didn't want to reformat the drive because I have a lot work to save off from it yet.

I did not want to format either. I am an educator and there is no really crucial sofware or important files on my computer. I am an electronics hobbyist and I download a lot of free stuff. I can redownload them again.

I had to format because 8 out of 10 *.exe files were infected. It took me the whole week end.

I hope that the virus won't hamper your work. There may me different names for the bastard. Check it often.

Good luck

A nasty bug eh? ugh hate it!

This bug is only a factor to contend in Windows O/S XP and earlier.

A fix is available without formatting

Generic PUP.z!o

Is not a Trojan or Malware virus, it is a part of a legitimate Trojan identifier program...

You just shot yourself in foot restore the script !

Look what it says!!!

Besides, it was asking me if I want to keep it or destroy it and I decided to kill the C......wihout actually knowing what it is but now I restored it, thanks.

Incidentally, how you get rid of the other earlier identified bug by GMER?

I still couldn't delete it as I did not see a delete button.
