I hope you mean without attaching a desktop or laptop personal computer. For you must have some computer to do the following things from your memory card:

  1. Sort out which file you want from your memory card into an audio signal
  2. Decompress the data of this file into the raw binary data stream.
  3. Sequentially and at a constant pace send this raw binary data to a D/A converter.
  4. Drive your speakers/headphones with the regenerated analog signal through an audio amplifier.

Now you'd like me to tell you how to do this with a chip set you'll find at Radio Shack for less than the price of a portable MP3 player. I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling that I'd be properly appreciated if I did this.

Oh I know, . Why don't you take a series of classes in electrical engineering and come back here and tell us how you did this. (Maybe I am being a little insensitive here.)

I dont know why he would want to make one, just take his output and make a jack to go to the input on an old stereo system where the turntable or acc plug goes. you can get them at junk stores for $10 or less. Also you could splice your output to the mike input on a baby monitor, then take the recieving baby monitors speaker loose and input that signal to the old stereo. or output to a $5.00 big lots fm transmitter, and use a radio or stereo system to listen. You should hear how sensitive my outdoor mikes are, just a junkstore baby monitor spliced into a home stereo system and you can hear a frog fart at 200 meters. crickets become deafening around 4 on the audio control. You dont need any masters degree to do some things. If you get a screaming audio feedback, reduce input level with a variable potimiter(volume control) and reduce stereo volume

Anyone asking a question using imperfect English will probably miss such niceties as 'frog fart' or even 'Radio Shack' and 'junk store'.

...or...(you forgot)..."potimiter"

one more proof that you absolutely positively cannot be an engineer if you ever won a spelling bee beuh.

It is probably both kind and useful to send an ignorant questioner back to school (presuming that he had ever been there at all). It may be more effective if this is done not only more kindly but using much simpler English.

Keep in mind that this chap's english is at least his second language. How many languages do you know? You come off as bit racist.

Writing a real reply to a 'Guest' is a useless exercise. Still, I'd like to put it to you that you don't even know the meaning of 'racist'. Go find a dictionary and look it up.

I'll grant you that my English maybe more nuanced for an ESL individual to grasp all of the subtleties. But if he/she never confronts a carefully sculpted sentence, how will they ever learn the meaning of "nuance". As far as kindness, well this individual clearly did not even consider what was being asked for. I wished the OP to realize that I was offended by this lack of consideration.

I suggest you find a used car stereo with a usb port and de-engineer it for your purposes.

yo dude just buy a cheap mp3 player. They can be found dirt cheap. Then if the audio isn't what you need any simple audio amp wil git-er-done. I have just such a rig that I have down loaded numerous animal sounds that I use as a perdator call. just crank up a squealing rabit and pop the coyotes as they come to dinner.

Already been done. How good are you at reverse engineering?
