New Monitor, Old Toolmaking Machine

10/21/2009 9:37 AM

Hi all,

I have recently replaced a faulty crt monitor with a new flat screen unit on a toolmaking EDM machine manufactured by ARD in Taiwan (machine manufacturers gone out of business). The system is run on a 486 CPU. The monitor is showing the system booting up and then shows a message "Run system set up" & "Press F1 to continue". However, we dont have F1 on our machine Keypad. Connection from the keypad to the keypad PCB has 4 cables into an old style circular connector, I think it is called a PS2. This is connected through an adaptor to a mini PS2 with 6 pins. If I connect an ordinary computer Keyboard I get a "Keyboard Error" message. Can anyone help on this?

Regards

Tom

Re: Problem after fitting new monitor on toolmaking machine

10/21/2009 11:13 AM

Well, a couple of problems... First off - the PC is probably seeing the new monitor and want's 'you' to either set the parameters for it in the BIOS; or it 'sees' a new monitor and doesn't quite know what to do with it... Albeit the CPU may even be OEM from the company that makes the machine... If that's the case, ouch! For the keyboard - you may want to look for one of those old style keyboards, the one with the circular 4 pin connector. If indeed the system is OEM'ed by the manufacturer of the machine... This may pose problems.

First off, find one of those old style keyboards... Many adapters don't quite cut it with an older OS/System. Because you could find yourself bying $100.00 or more in adapters to even find one that works, or get fed up with this process and not find any that work... Once you get an old keyboard, this will let you continue to let the system boot. Secondly - you could try an older CRT monitor if you have one laying around - hopefully the system will recognize it without any problems or need for drivers; this may or may not work...

Another thing is that it depends upon what kind of OS that system is running, probably OEM and 'specialized' for what that machine is designed for and you may want to back the system up... But lets try to get it up and running now.

Good Luck :)

The Bios in the computer is what is giving you the message. When you talk about the keyboard connector, are you talking about the one on the computer or one at the end of a cable that plugs into the computer? If the computer has the old large round one you can find an old style keyboard that should plug directly in and run and allow you to hit F1. That will probably be all you will need to do to solve your problem. There are a lot of nonstandard patch cables made into machines such as yours. Let us know and I'll keep working with you.

Hi Guys,

Just to come back on this,(still no success) The connector cable for the keypad is soldered to the back of the keypad(PCB). It has 4 cores which go to a large 5 pin (IBM PS2?) connector. which has been connected to another mateing socket to allow a connection to a small 6 pin PS2 (Mini Dini) to the computer pcb. Connecting an old type IBM keyboard with a 6 pin PS2, which was used with an old CRT monitor directly into the socket on the computer PCB, brings up a "Keyboard Error" message. Reconnecting my original keypad clears the Error message, but brings up the previously mentioned "Hit F1 to continue". I am assuming that all of these connectors have the 4 pins connected as Vcc+, Gnd, Data & Clock. Would that be correct? Perhaps as suggested this has an OEM configured setup, but if not, is there any way to confirm I am getting the correct connection / signals?

The factory manager has decided to give up on this and bring forward the replacement of the machine, but for my on satisfaction I would like to try and solve the problem. (You know how it is, it's now personal)

Regards,

Tom

Dia dhuit,

Try asking your question in the general section and you will be exposed to many more readers.

Have you tried finding an old 486 PC with a keyboard.

I will ask around at work tomorrow or may even have one lying around here. If I have I will email a photo of the connector from the keyboard and you can see if it suits. I have family visiting this coming week and they could mail it from home or I can mail it from here directly.

How is Sligo. Is Feehily's Pub still alive or the Blue Lagoon. Went to Toolmaking School in Sligo----long time ago.
