Maximum Temperature Limit - IS 2062 and IS1079

10/26/2009 6:52 AM

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me the maximum temperature limit for IS 2062 Gr.A/B and IS 1079 Gr.0?

I am designing a vessel whose design temperature is 500 °C and i have been told to use IS 2062 Gr.A. But i have a doubt about the said material. I need to know whether IS 2062 Gr.A can be used for such a high temperature. If not then what are the alternate materials which can be used?

Thanks & Regrads,

cr4 member

What is inside the vessel at 500degC, and what is its pressure at that temperature?

inside vessel is steam and its design pressure is 1.0 kg/cm2.

basically its a silencer.

IS2062 is a general purpose structural (Gr A is FE410WA). I am not sure about its behavious at that temperature. Our pressure vessels never use these, for which we have BQ steels. Did you consider other like IS2002 (Specification of steel plates for pressure vessels for intermediate and high temperature service including boilers)?

or SA516 grades?

Definitely the IS 2062 is not suitable for 500 deg C .The maximum metal temperature that can with stand by IS 2062 is 350-400 deg. I advise to go for SA387 Gr 11.

IS 2062 Gr. A with C 0.20 %, Mn less 0.6 % is used only for structural type jobs. It is suitable for temp. less than 300 deg.C and gets oxidized fast at elevated temperatures. It is not appropriate for your requirement.

Towards IS 1079 there are nearly four grades available like st 34-1079, st 42-1079, st 50-1079, st 52-1079 . Further there are grades like D, DD, EDD -1079 . In all the cases the Mn is less than 0.50 % and will not suit your requirements.

It is better to go for alloy steels like 13 Cr Mo44, 15 Cr Mo3, ASTM 0.5 Cr- 0.5 Mo, A335-55 P2, or Gr-P11, etc. as these metals will with stand a creep resistance up to 550 deg C.

Still if you are particular, go for 15 CrMo5, ASTM A 182-F2, F11, F12, A335 P2 type materials, as they withstand creep and heat resistance up to 550 deg C.

Use E (R) 8018 B2 type filler metals for SMAW & GTAW welding.

Preheat (150 deg C) , inter pass temp ( up to 200/225 deg C). & post stress relieving is ( at 670-690 deg C) is recommended.

Sridhar.

dear mr ashraf

we have one code IBR(indian Boiler regulation) which clearly stipulates which are the steel suitable for pressure vessels handling steam. IS 2062 is an Indian standard specification meant for general purpose structural application and this is not suitable for pressure vesstel. I feel IS2002 is suitable for your application and you may try s ASTM suitable material. please try to understand beyond a particular temperature and pressure the pressure vessels are to be designed and fabricated as per the Country's rules and regulations.
