The lux level required for street lighting varies from country to country and even from location to location. The lux level for roads in cities will be much higher as compared to the lux level to be obtained in a small town with lesser users in the evening. In an industrial plant the lux level are generally as per the client requirements.

In India in industrial plants lux levels are around 10.

For calculating the number of fixtures required, mounting height and the distance between the fixtures you need to carry out a lux level calculation and arrive at the average lux level achieved. But remember that the location of fixtures are such that there are no dark spots and the uniformity ratio is around 0,5

You may pl refer to National Building Code for getting the basic guide-lines.Pole height:Spanning of the poles needs to be worked out based on selection of the Luminaires ,depending upon the traffic density, type of vehicles movement and road conditions/restrictions and also on weather conditions.Hope this may be of some help .

The IESNA (Illuminating Engineers Society of North America) at iesna.org is a goo source for lighting design information.

I agree with all the previous posts. In addition, many well-known manufacturers of lighting fixtures will give a designer the software required to complete a full photometric study of the area. The software is easy to use, free and can be set to English or Metric (fc or lux). Contact GE, Holophane, Philips, etc.

I understand the specification for outdoor public lighting, including street lighting is published as part of the Indian National Electrical Code by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The code will probably assume a knowledge of lighting calculations, a knowledge of the human physiological response to the visual environment and access to specialised software to calculate luminaire spacing.

Members of Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE) may be able to assist if you need help.

Gee in the USA just call Water & Power and ask to talk with the street lighting expert. Best info you can get.
