Les Paul PAF Pickups with 60-Hz Hum

10/28/2009 9:31 PM

Well I took the advice of everybody who answered my thread (except the wise guys LOL) and found several ground loops and a bad pickup wire that was shorting. I also did research Goggling the net and I am drawing my final wiring diagram and will use a single point signal ground which will connect to the 1/4" jack ground along with Bridge wire ground and cavity ground at one point. Also the pickups (2 wire stock PAFs) are not shielded at ALL (unbelievable). Even though there is a braid shield wire the dump idiots use it as a signal wire plus if you touch the pickups they hum more!!! So I got on eBay and bought 1/2" 18 yards of 3M Copper foil for shielding pickups and will use it to shield the wires to the single point signal ground. I bought on eBay Bumblebee caps 0.022uf vintage for the tone controls and CTS pots NOT Alpha $1.69 pots. Just FYI and I may put the schematic on my website after it works of course. I have played other so called great Guitars in a music store and they all hum worst than mine. The salesman said active guitars do not hum so I picked up an Ibanez 5-string bass and it sounded like crap hum all over the place give me a break. Grounding is an exact science my friends I am studying about it very interesting.

As a keyboard/piano player I discovered the dreaded noise/hum issues everywhere i ever played. The issue gets even worse when other band members gear is plugged in. Each piece of equipment produces it's own ground loops and when they are all running off the same circuit....hell can break loose, particularly when the lighting guys turn up and plug their crap gear onto the same circuit and then give the the "what?" balnk stare at you signifying it's not their problem.

You almost need a masters degree in grounding to sort these issues out for each venue. Good luck.
