Neat idea! I wish the write-up had also stated how many amps were produced under such-and-such conditions. Also good to know would be how many lumens/watt from the LED array. Abraham Lincoln would have loved this!

Am I missing something here? Doesn't burning twigs make light directly? Last time I checked, fire made light. People have been reading by candles or campfire for many years before LED's were even invented. I'm just saying...

The part you missed is that the device generates electricity, not light.

No, I didn't miss that at all. Apparently the part you missed was where the article mentioned in nearly half a dozen places that the device was intended to be used for lighting. Which only makes sense if you understand the technology because it would not generate enough power to do much other than light some LED's. Don't know how you got a good answer for not paying attention.

Alright, I've got it! I'm a genius. I need to apply for a grant. I just invented the wind powered fan. That's right. It takes a breeze, turns it into electricity with a generator and you then use the electricity to run a motor hooked to a fan blade to cool yourself. It's the next best thing to a personal air conditioner. I don't know why it took me so long to think of this.

Apparently the same way you got one for being a smart ass!

How efficient compared to other combustion processes for generating electricity? I.e., carbon footprint? If firewood is already in short supply, this will be less handy. So there are advantages and disadvantages both.

They claim that there is no net increase in wood consumed.

I don't know.
