Disk or Network Error

11/02/2009 6:52 AM

I have a video camera surveillance system (Q-See QSPDVR04) installed in my computer which entails a plug-in card with inputs for four cameras and software. It records events to an external drive initiated by camera sensed motion or a sensor.

To ensure the system does not become unstable, there is an auto reboot feature which restarts the computer on a selectable interval.

It has been working very well for many months but recently on reboot, I get an error message on start-up which says "Network or Disk Error." The computer is not connected to a network. Until I acknowledge the message, the startup will not proceed. Once I acknowledge the error message, the program continues to restart. This will prevent the program from functioning when I am away.

Does any have experience with this system and know the cause of the error?

Can anyone suggest ways to trouble shoot and eliminate the problem?

Does the PC post?

Is the BIOS sending this message or the OS?

Not enough information.

I don't know what you mean by "Does the PC post."

When the computer reboots, the programs in the startup directory proceed to start and the surveillance program begins to start but stops when the error message appears. Once I click on "OK" on the error message, the surveillance program completes startup.

How can I tell if the BIOS is sending the message? It's a standard looking error message with no other info than the error message itself.

When you boot, the BIOS displays messages and beeps once if all tests pass. This is the post process.

After these tests, the operating system takes over.

Finally the applications run.

When does the error message appear, before or after the beep? Before or after the operating system loads? Before or after the application is run?

The BIOS boot is totally blanked out on this cpu.

All the Desktop and system tray icons load and the programs in the startup file begin opening. When the SuperDVR (surveillance) program begins opening , the error message appears. Then the antivirus program (Avira for personal use) begins startup, the error message appears again at which point, the process stops. Once I click on "OK" on the error message, the surveillance program and Avira complete opening.

It sounds to me like you might have some sort of automatic updater package trying to access a network that doesn't exist. Check your start-up programs, look for updaters, and disable them. Depends on your operating system as to how this is accomplished...

bwire,

The link you provided appears to contain the fix. However, I have Windows XP and I don't know how to access DOS to install the suggested folder C:\Temp

Go to start, Accessories, CMD Promt and type the following and press enter:

MD C:\TEMP

Where C:\ is your hard disk drive letter.

The response I got was that "a subdirectory or file C:\Temp already exists."

I do have an external F drive where all the video data is recorded. Do you think that a Temp file would also be required there?

Taking a cue from the clue:

MD C:\TEMP

Where C:\ is your hard disk drive letter.

In your case F:\ is the disk drive letter.
