Designing Solar Lanterns

11/04/2009 11:34 PM

I want to follow up on how to make a cheap solar lantern and provide to some of the poor village schools in india. Can anyone help me on how to approach the design and development of a solar lantern in a cost effective way as the marketed items are costing much higher in price.

Solar powered lanterns are already well known.

The solar lantern works really well-in the daytime.

There are some very low drop semi's available from ZETEX, who have application notes to build fluorescent lanterns based around their ZTX652 BJT.

To minimise the final cost you'll probably be looking to piggyback on an existing popular item. For example, manufacturers of electric hand-tools sometimes have large quantities of cheap, but high capacity NiCd cells to offload.

Good luck

My friend. My Advise: 1 st buy solar lantern from manufacturer, negotiate with them. evaluate the product design, cost, economics etc etc and than go for manufacturing.

I would include mirrors in the design to get the most light from the lantern as possible.

If you are in India please mail Mr.Santosh Janardhan, santosh(at)labteklimited(dot)com with your idea. He is a like minded person with facilities. He also has sources for low cost components.

Have a look at the Stanford University Design school lantern product/program of a couple of years ago. It has some lessons on design by non local values. Then look at the solar recharging 'kiosk' program in India and what it took to kick it off. Then consider how what you might invest is best invested to serve actual educational needs. Make the right choices and you may well do a lot of good.
