Diesel Tank Fabrication

dear all,

pls give some important factors to be considered to fabricate 10000 liters capacity of diesel storage tank. we are very new to this storage tank fabrication.no other choice we need to do.so pls give details for selection of material, calculation for required diameter and height of tank, .anyone has design or tips ,welcome.

Start with the ground conditions.

  • Is the tank sitting flat on its bum or is it on legs?
  • What dimensional constraints must it pass between where it is to be fabricated and its final rusting resting place?
  • Does it have a sloping bottom so as to assist with emptying to service or to waste?
  • Does it require a secondary containment bund, in case it leaks? If so, what is its footprint, given a need to contain 110% of the stored volume?
  • Does it need personnel access? Ladder? Walkway at top? What are the overhead constraints?
  • What sort of nozzle arrangements does in need? Sizes of these?

API 620 - design and construction of large, welded, field-erected low-pressure carbon steel aboveground storage tanks

API 650 - Welded steel tanks for Oil storage.

API 653 (for repair and reconstruction- not useful for you)

Since it is a small tank, I missed that aspect, your standard is likely API 12F. This takes care of material, design, and construction requirements for vertical, cylindrical, aboveground, shop-welded steel tanks in nominal capacities of 90 to 500 bbl (ie around 10,000L to 60,000L)

The API 12D is for field welded tanks. for 500bbl to 10,000bbl ie 60,000L to 1.3 million liters.

BTW Just have a look in this page from API, it will cover all the aspects that you need.

The API pages being copyrighted, I will not be able to attach them. And then these are in hard copies. May be able to help in specific queries, if it does not violate.

Also if you check the net, there are softwares available for the design of tanks according to API 650 (which covers all the tank sizes unlike 12 Series)

There is this link too (of some standard tank sizes)

Just had a cursory look in API 650.

It is covering the total tank scenario. The appendix A is for small size tanks and tha table 1 gives some sample tank diameters and liters per inch height. What is your business size? if you can afford, try to get a copy along with may be a tank design software to API 650 it has almost 400 pages and is worth it in case you have the business affordability. After all you are in API zone (at least for this case) and API design is accepetd by NFPA too.

Diesel storage tank 10 000 lit is considered small tank which its capacity is 10 m3 (353.15 ft3 = 62.9 bbl = 2641.72 Gallon), you can use API 12D. See Table-1 & Figure-1 of API 12D.

You can use any carbon steel material such as: ASTM A36, ASTM A283 Grade C, Steel 37 or any grade of carbon steel material. No need to use pressure vessel plates like as ASTM A285 Grade C or ASTM A516.

The storage tank plate thickness can be used as 1/4 inch (6 mm), and try to calculate it depending on the tank diameter, tank height, strength of tank material, and specific gravity of fluid.

From API 12F "Specification for Shop Welded Tanks for Storage of Production Liquids", Table-1 & Figure-1 "Tank Dimensions", the min. nominal tank capacity found in table is 90 bbl (72 bbl approx. working capacity) with:

- Outside Tank Diameter: 7 ft - 11 in.

- Tank Height: 10 ft

Note. The user can select another tank dimensions for diameter and height to match with his needs.

Please check your applicable local saftey codes which might demand that certail requirements have to be met in design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and operation of fuel tanks!

Without going into a lot of guess work due to the lack of given information, I will only give general rules for design. First, the tank should be cylindrical with domed ends and be positioned horizontally if possible. A tall tank will require greater material thickness than a lower cylindrical tank. Some means of access to the tank for maintenance/cleaning? needs to be provided. A means of "sounding" the tank (checking oil level). An oil tight containment area around the tank to accomodate spills or leaks. A fire sensing system. Is insulation or a heating system needed? Assuming the tank will be outdoors, can you provide protection from the weather? Is the tank conveniently located for filling? Are warning signs posted and fire extinguishers of the proper kind in convenient locations. The tank should have a prominent sign posted as to the contents of the tank. Piping to and from the tank should be color coded so it can't be mistaken for any other fluid. I think you have enough things to think about besides following the safety codes.
