Welding Electrodes

11/06/2009 12:15 PM

Hi guys

i have one disc which hardness varies from 450 to 520 BHN. One Groove was formed in the circumference.

I have to close and made smooth for operation requirement. I didnt get what material it was.. pls give suggestion for welding this disc.

Could you explain the application?

What machine part is.?

It is a carbon steel , or stainless steel.?

Send out/obtain a hand-held x-ray alloy analyzer to determine the metallurgy

I'm sure there are many more than:

Welcome to dwekam.com

Brinell

- II

C0.20
Mn0.60
Si0.40
Cr3.20
S0.010
P0.014
As-Weld350 - 400 BHN.
A general-purpose hardsurfacing electrode deposits air-hardening Cr-Mn weld metal. The electrode works in both AC & DC polarity and

produces machinable deposits. Suitable for application against higher abrasion & impact.

It will be better to carried out chemical analysis for composition of material, there are so many testing equipment are avialable for chemical analysis with destroying the product after that you can select the better welding consumable for long and better service of the product. otherwise you may go for dwekam electrode brinell II as one our friend suggested above.

Sivabalan,

Hardness beyond 500 BHN will have lot of surface tension and it may not be possible to overlay it again directly. Such hardness is non-machinable and can only be ground.

To avoid LF and to get a crack free build up in difficult or in any unknown composition, a buffer or cushioned layer is preferred, prior to final hardened layer.

E312 (30Cr-10Ni) or E 307 (18Cr-8Ni-5Mn) type SS electrodes, if it is Manganese/ unknown material or Low hydrogen type E7016 / E7018 if it is CS will help to avoid above problems.

Final layer could be done with any air hardening deposit which can give required hardness of 500 BHN and finished by grinding.

You can also attempt the salvaging work by depositing initially with a hard facing electrode on the surface of the disc, inspect the weld for cracks (by DPT) and LF and continue the overlay welding and finish it.

If you face any problems, then use of buffer weld layer with SS will help to solve the problems if any.
