If it's not inspected, how do you know there's still a vacuum? What could happen if there isn't one?

The Vacuum bottles of the VCB are usually not maintainable, you will have to replace them if the vacuum is lost. Most manufacturers provide maintenance manuals telling you what to look for. There is also a spring-charged / solenoid mechanism, which may need some inspection and maintenance. What make is the VCB? Maybe you can get the manual off the web, if you do not have a copy.

VCB Interrupters (Bottles) are not maintainable. However, the VCB has also got Mechanism and other parts which definitely need maintenance. For the bottles, though, a HV test is recommended annually. This is to ensure that the vacuum is not lost.
