That's a pretty broad question. Lightning arresters (or more properly surge arresters) are voltage sensitive devices designed for overvoltage protection, as opposed to overcurrent protection. There are several standard classes of surge arresters, as well as several types.

Classes are generally secondary, distribution, intermediate and station. Types are gapped silicon carbide and gapped and gapless MOV. Surge arresters are designed to discharge impulse overvoltages (lightning, switching surge, etc). They are not designed for AC or DC overvoltages.

Application criteria include maximum system voltage, system grounding, maximum TOV (temporary system overvoltage), energy absorption capability, etc.

Recommend taking a look at manufacturers' catalogs such as Ohio Brass at www.hubbellpowersystems.com. In addition to the catalogs, the website includes application guides and other publications related to surge arresters.

Good luck.

I currently am using the transient voltage surge suppressors on my building. I use one and the main when the voltage comes into the building. Then i have a redundant set up on the secondary main supplying all my equipment.

I am pleased to say that it has been in operation now for about 3 years and have had no damage to equipment caused by voltage surges from lightening or the power company.

The device is from Innovative Technologies inc. and it is called The IT Protector.

An ecellent device that has worked flawlessly.

Dear

Have you tested it? or after you have installed it, have occured some lightning in your zone? if no how you can be sure that it had protected for previous 3 years?

if there are some testing procedure, please comment on it.

It has been thoroughly tested. We lost several components in the prior 3-5 years the totaled more than $20,000 in electronic components and motors. I have 2 buildings here one that has been upgraded with surge supressors and one that has not.

I 3 different lightening storms I have lost equipment in the unprotected building directly related to these storms and have also lost equipment from power surges in the same building.

In the protected building i have not lost any equipment since the installation of the protection. This includes all the above problems and one transformer meltdown. And I Mean Meltdown.

And before it is asked yes I plan on doin the same upgrade to the other building as soon as I am allowed the budgeted monies in plan to get the job done. It is not cheap and we are a small company.

To demonstrate heretofore unknown extrasensory perception skills, I am going to say that our guest is interested in the sort of lightning arrestors to be found atop a tower, not the ones found in the power supply to a computer or other electronic device.

Further... I predict that our poster will join up with CR4, and take a handle beginning with the letter S.

Ken,

My, but aren't you the perceptive one?

I was going to post that the term lightning arrestor can apply to anything from whole lightning rod/grounding systems, to simple insulators separating a circuit from a ground with a simple gap and including all manner/sophistication of surge suppression equipment when I saw this post.

I was thinking along your lines also, but you beat me to it.

Greg
