Any Spider Solitare Players Out There?

03/03/2010 11:05 PM

I bought a Windows 7 laptop with the new Spider Solitare, and I don't like it. I play the four-suit game, and can usually win one out of ten on my XP-based desktop PC.

But the 7 version is awful. I run streaks of 25 or 30 losses at a time. When I clear out the statistics and start over, I can once again win 10%. But the more I play, the harder it gets. It's not that I'm playing it wrong, it's just that there is no way to win. What's going on here? The XP version is not like that.

I also dislike the new graphics, the help key is not very helpful (it misses a lot of perfectly good plays) and I don't like the snide little screen that tells me there are no plays left.

What I'd like to do is get the same version that's running on my XP machine. I've hunted around a little, and can't seem to find the exact match. Anybody know where I can download it?

Yeah, I know, I'm supposed to be working, not playing. But it's the only game I play, so forgive me.

I've never tried W7 version, but my wife plays the two suit version on W7. She does OK. In XP, I quickly gave up on the ridiculously easy 4 suit version and moved up to the extremely challenging 1 suit version. I'm able to win at least 0.33 % of the time.

Seriously, have you looked at replacing the game with one of the downloads?

I would if I could find the XP version. I can find lots of downloadable versions, but not that one.

Yes, when you first start, the four-suit game is easy. But when you win a few, they get harder. Not harder, actually--just unwinnable. I've gone back to the beginning on a couple of games, and tried every possible combination, and still can't win.

I thought that with all mutli-pack games (a) solution was always possible. I spent too much time on it so tried deleting it from my XP PC. There is still one copy left...

I always thought that, too. It doesn't make sense to design a game that nobody can win.

Install XP into W7. You'll not find the XP spider for sale it's an MS toy only.

It's not the same. First, you can Ctrl M all the way back to the beginning of a game and start over from scratch without penalty. Second, you can't just shut the computer down and have it forget the games you lost (on XP, I have 122 wins and 4 losses by doing this. That's probably 1,200 games played.) Third, the graphics are slightly different. And fourth, you can actually win XP games.

Surely that defeats the object of having the stats!

If your going to forget the games you lose and just keep the ones you win it seems a bit pointless to me.

So who wants stats? I just want to play the game--and win, sometimes.

I'm currently at 9-10% wins on Windows 7 version of 4-suit; was 5-6% on XP. Have got used to the new graphics now.

That's where I was for the first two months, but now the games are getting impossible. I found that if you delete the statistics, they get winnable again.

I wonder if the games are random for everyone or a fixed sequence? Anyone know?

Yup, it is addictive and currently tracking about 9% on XP. It seems to get easier on weekends, when I can slow down and concentrate. I have won twice in a row several times, but can't manage a three banger.

I am convinced there are outside forces at work beyond just a random shuffle and deal. Some evil genius has had a part in the design.

I've been playing Spider Solitare as well on W7. The only way I could win was to set the parameters to 2 suits instead of 4. Tough game, but fun...

Damn, I must be an idiot! I have never won the 4 suit version on XP. I can win the 2 suit version about 10% of the time but I am death on the 1 suit version...

It's not that hard. Your problem probably is that you are trying for a max score on the 2-suit version, so you don't make any unnecessary moves that would lower your score.

The trick is to maximize every deal in the 4-suit version, including going all the way back to the beginning of each deal to make sure that you have made the best possible choices before dealing more cards. It's hard for a 2-suit player to adapt to this style of play, but that's how you win 4-suit.

Use the "undo" key a lot. Also, you need to guard one or more empty space by not putting kings on them or piling up more than one suit on a blank. There are other tricks, but blank spaces are golden.
