Who has ever heard of lifetime warranties?

05/07/2010 10:56 PM

This video was posted in a globalspec newsletter (Specs & Techs for Products)

It is a shocker. I've never heard that you could get lifetime warranties on replacement products. Is this something that is available for all vehicles? If it keeps the vehicle in perfect running order, then how much money would be saved? Is this a sane plan? If everyone did this, and demanded this, would the parts industry change their warranties?

I like her - pistol-packin' mama! My mom blew me away about a year ago when she pulled out a Glock from her purse. She's 74!

Great story!

About the lifetime parts warranty, I'd have to do some research - I would think that there's an upcharge for it.

Hay Chris, Some of the "life time warranty" I've seen you had to have all schedule service performed by the selling dealer and you have average mileage limits to follow.

I also think there was a up sale in price for the auto also.

There was a auto dealer that went belly up near where I live that sold Kia's. There was some problems with getting another Kia dealer to take over. Though I think they worked out something with the other dealer and customers.

Most warranties of such is more of a revenue stream for the dealers to keep the car owner coming back.

"Most warranties of such is more of a revenue stream for the dealers to keep the car owner coming back"

but it still sounds like in the video that the owner is spending less overall, because there are no new vehicle sales. just an added cost initially for a part that has a lifetime warranty.. after that, nothing for 40 years for that part.. (16 batteries were mentioned)

so how does the dealer make money with that?

Ok, I watched the video but no sound.

I was thinking about a different warranty system. The "life time Warranties" your talking about is on the parts. First most "life time" covers the part but not the labor. Also most "life time" does not transfer to another owner. So that person buys the part and if it wears out before they sell the auto then they can get a replacement "free" the shop gets the labor for fixing it.

Most auto parts stores around sell replacement items with "life time" although that item will cost 3-6 times more than a "similar" part that does not have a "life time". Though sometimes you have to deal with the maker of the part to get the warranty honored when you do your own work.

There can be limitations in the warranty about what "life time" means.

So if you bough a new auto and keep the maintenance on the auto spend a little more for "life time" parts and did your own work you would be far ahead in cost of ownership with original cost versus to buy a new auto every 5-10 years. That is were she comes out ahead.

Brilliant...
They don't make 'em like that any more.... I mean the lady!
Gotta love her!

OK, back on topic...That's brilliant PR for the lifetime warranty, most times they'll never get called upon to fulfill the deal as people lose/forget the paperwork, sell/wreck the car.

This kind of warranties most of the time don't cover all the plastic and glass accessory's and parts. and also the lubricants and consumables, Also the term "If it keeps the vehicle in perfect running order," is very subjective. and you ll have to prove it to seller every time you go for service.

In my opinion they earn much more on every service than what they offer for free.

All come on chris how many people you know have kept their car for 43 years. If I write a warranty for life with the knowledge that maybe 1% of the people will keep ownership for over 5 years how do you lose. You also have to remember when they wrote those warranties they build a more durable product. Like the car she is driving. At one time even our auto makers tried to make things to last. Glad they got one right.

When i sell my pump i give one year operational warranty on my ducon condensate power pump + life-time warranty on the Float assembly unit.

Life-time = 7 years (Life imprisonment = 14 years which is counted day & night).

The operational warranty is your money 100% refunded if technically you find that you the pump does not work for you. Afterwards the float assemby, an expensive imported mechanism is garunteed 7 years provided every 4 months the user sends me a letter confirming that the pump is working ok and that he does not open/tamper the float assembly without my permission.

Sale was 1 pump/6 months about 4 years back. Now 4 pumps/month. 70% repeat order.

In 4 years took back 2 pumps and refunded full amount (after use 6-7 months) not because of pump's fault but because majority steam traps started leaking and the pump body will fill up with steam-so nothing to pump. Today, these 2 plants are my best referral as " honest, means what he says".

you can log on www.youtube.com , type "duconems" on search and click.

last month April sold 4 sets, this month (today 1 set went as reapeat order to a plant where a duplex (2 pumps) unit was sold 4 years back) 5 sets (4 going next week).

the reason is simple - my pumps are going with my name"ducon" and irrespective, i 'll do everyting not to tarnish it! I'm simple one-man show and do not take into account what is done locally/internationally, I just try to do my sales and marketing my way and I see it is paying off and this is what counts to me.

Addition to above - another thing that is unheard-

I take 100% advance the pump price prior delivery because (50% would delay payment 2-3 months and 10% over 6-8 months while 10% would run off). Because of my reputation and my operational + lifetime warranty and 100s referral (with Client list detailing names + cell nos) companys tend to bend their rules to comply.

With every pump sold, only after expiry of one-year do I take a sigh of relief.

In begining it was very very difficult but now it has become a trend that for ducon pumps you need to pay 100% first but then again his warranties stand which is most important to have an expensive equipment runing care-free 7 years.
