Netbook PC

05/10/2010 12:00 PM

Hi,

I would like to know which would be the cheapest at the same time good quality Netbook available. The brands in mind - ASUS, MSI, DELL Mini.

I would like to have one with 2 gb RAM with fairly good video resolution where are many are having only 1 gb RAM and most dealers say it is not upgradable.

Awaiting comments please..

I would say hold off for a little while, but if you need a netbook now try and get something with Ion 2. Check out the link below for Asus Eee PC1201PN with Ion 2.

Ion 2 Based Eee PC Link

Another technology by NVIDIA called "Optimus" allows for the user to turn the notebooks GPU on or off, thus allowing for stronger battery life when not using GPU intensive applications.

I've had poor experiences with Acer and recommend you stay away from them, but Asus has always been on point for me.

Are you certain you want a netbook? Have you tried to use one? I was also interested in netbooks and was able to "play" with a few at a local store. I found even the largest of the displays to be unacceptably small. IMHO, a low end laptop with a normal size LCD display, larger keyboard, upgradeable/replaceable RAM and HDD only cost a little more and worked much better for my intended use. Good luck either way.

well mjb,

thanx for your comments... you felt it that way... as you did not think of carrying it with you more often.

I have used it ...currently using Compaq - 14"--- compared I felt it light and convenient... and would suit my applications....

I was looking for a practical (not a fashion statement) travel PC and size and weight WERE my reasons for considering a netbook. I am getting older, but I don't have any problem carrying the extra 2 pounds for the laptop I chose. I have gladly traded the smaller size and weight for superior ergonomics and longer useful life. When that extra 2 pounds becomes a burden, I think it will be time for me to retire!

If a netbook is where you want to go I'd go with the Asus 1005peb with the Intel Atom N450 processor and the 250 GB HDD. Watch out for spec 'cos it varies a lot dependant on location. This typically comes with 1GB ram but can easily be upgrades (did mine myself in 5 minute using only my trust Leatherman).

Bear in mind you really must want the portability and/or battery life for a netbook to make sense. However if you do then go Asus.

Hi and good morning,

I have so far only ever used standard size laptop computers and have recently bought a 10" Asus Eee. Beyond your technological choice is the practical/physical point of view; do try them all "fully" in the shops.

Size and weight of Eee are fine but I am disappointed with (silver) pressure points bar for left and right action below the touch pad. Compared to others it requires a positive hard pressure instead of a soft touch.

Another point to consider is the practical side of the position of the feed points, left ? right ? at the back ? it might depend on your desk size and on which side your power, internet, USB, printer, etc.... cables will be coming from. ((( I use wifi as little as possible and I am therefore plagued with cables )))

good hunting and good luck

Rajkochi,

If you do a little searching, you will find out why the Netbooks are selling with 1GB of RAM, and why the dealers tell you it's not upgradeable. Microsoft has placed a limit of 1GB of RAM on the Vendors who sell netbooks with Windows XP Home installed. They did this to try to limit the power of netbooks. They would rather you go out and buy a computer with Vista (and now Windows 7), so they can make more money on the license. They also limit the screen size, and hard drive size.

That being said, you can add RAM yourself, provided the unit you buy will support it, so be sure you find out what the maximum RAM is for the machine you are considering.

This information may be a bit old, I think there are netbooks out there now running Windows 7, and they may not suffer from the limits set on units running XP.

Well, just did a quick search, and it seems Micro$oft has their fingers in the newer stuff as well. More arbitrary limits on hardware, on any netbook running a Microsoft OS. See this Google search:

LINK

My daughter will be heading off to college soon, and I had thought about getting a netbook for her, but with the limits on screen size, RAM, and drive space, I'll probably have to go to a full-blown laptop.

On a personal note, I have used an ASUS EEE 10.2" screen, running XP, and I was very pleased with it's performance.

Hope that helps,

Tom

I would 100% get a "full blown notebook" for your college bound student. Just get one that's 12-14 inches and it'll still be somewhat light and mobile. I highly recommend Sony, but Lenovo Think Pads are solid. You can get nice machines from Sony or Lenovo without breaking the bank. If budget isn't an issue the 13" Apple Macbook / Macbook Pro are also good options.

The only reason I would recommend going with Dell or HP would be to get that Accidental Coverage warranty. That way if anything happens to it you're covered 100% and a tech goes to where ever the computer is to fix the machine. I currently use a Dell XPS m1530 and have only had to dip into my warranty for things like keys breaking off the keypad or a frozen pixel that drove me nuts.
