Single Lane Private Bridge

06/16/2010 3:35 PM

1. What size steel i-beams will i need to span a 24 foot wide creek, without center

support. This single lane private bridge will accommodate up to 10 lot owners.

Want bridge to be sturdy enough to support occasional cement truck, etc.

2. would a 3 feet over hang on each end be OK, thus making beam length 30 ft.

3. We will be using rough sawn 3 inch oak planks for bridge decking.

( This is my first time using this program so if there is posting similar to this, please advise. Thanks Dan.)

Have you looked into just using a flat car from the railroad?

They are fairly popular around here and support everything from Farm machinery to loaded log trucks.

farmatt beat me to it.

You will see this all over Montana. Contact Montana Rail Link (MRL), and see if they have retired rolling stock that might be suitable. If memory serves, a typical flatbed railcar has a load limit of around 100,000 Lbs. I also recall that limit is due to the trucks.

If you agree, I will award farmatt the 'GA' vote he deserves for being first with a Good Answer.

Oh Hell Doorman,

Just give him the GA. I did.

The OP may have different ideas. What do they cost?

Oh, yes,

Welcome to CR4. There are some really smart people here.

You have already encountered some of them.

We like pictures, if you have some of the ditch, that'll help with perspective.

Cheers.

All I knew was that they were widely used.

You got a GA from me for knowing where to find them!

Well, I sort of have an advantage there.

I lived in Missoula, Montana (Home of Washington Corp. parent of MRL) for about 25 years, and my ex-wife was the executive assistant to one of the top dawgs at MRL.

There are, most certainly, other places to get them. MRL just comes to mind. lynlynch gave a link for a dealer selling a car already converted to a bridge deck, ready to set on your bridgeheads.

A GA for farmatt from me. I drive over one of these in my area a couple times a month.

MontanaDan,

This is the fun stuff. I'm glad to make a small contribution.

Keep us posted, no matter what you use as a bridge. We'll all have opinions about how you should do things.

Cheers.

Another possibility is to use a 30' semi trailer deck.

These are not quite as wide but may be easier to come by.

Guides for the wheels can be welded to the sides, and is useful for those who are less than fair drivers.

Cheers

Tim

that semi trailer deck wont hold too much weight. A full cement truck may cause some stress.
