Can We Use 120v AC Adater In 220v AC Socket ?

06/21/2010 2:48 PM

Hi,

My friend got me a trimmer from US and this thing has a 120v AC adapter tha's supposed to charge it. Now, we have 220v AC line. Though, the frequency is same 60 HZ. I was wondering if we can use that adapter directly or will I need a converter or something .. if yes then which converter ?

and .. where can I buy it from ? :)

I live in Delhi, India

You will need a 220V to 110V step down transformer.

You could try Alibaba.com or an electronics supplier in your major shopping center.

No you can't. You will need a transformer/adapter to convert 220 volts to 120 volts, and also the correct plug adapter. Finding the adapter should be no problem, the advertising bots will have several links at the bottom of this page or you can do your own web search.

Of course the links rotate, and I see someone else also posted a link to start with, but what you're looking for should be readily available.

Most electronics shops have them, i could get one for ~ Rs 300 for a superb record player (50W) that my son sent. A smaller one may be enough for your trimmer. These come with a flat pin 110V US socket on the output side. If you don't have a shop nearby, go to Bhagirath Place.

I would get a "wall wart" locally for 220vac to whatever dc voltage your trimmer takes, making sure to check the polarity of the plug. This is likely to be cheaper, and sure to be more elegant, than a 220 x 120 transformer.

i didn't think of that. If the gadget is DC operated, the charger/adaptor is nowadays designed to wrok from 100V to 250V ... universal, so to speak. All one needs for such things is a flat pin to round pin adaptor, about Rs 25. Sometimes, there is a selector slider to change from 110V to 220V...my media player has that. However, my record player is only meant to work on 110V AC so i had to buy that transformer, an eyesore compared to the beautiful turntable with my priceless vinyls on it.

"If the gadget is DC operated, the charger/adaptor is nowadays designed to work from 100V to 250V"

That is true for many devices, including the power supply for this computer I'm typing on, but there are still many inexpensive devices that have a much narrower voltage range.

To the OP: Check the printing on the charger. If it says 120V 60HZ, then you need either a 220-120V transformer, or a new 220V charger. If you get a new charger, make sure it is for the correct kind of battery chemistry.

If it says something like 100-240V 50/60Hz, then all you need is a plug adapter or a new plug.

Oops. Despite the second chance that CR4 gives, horrible typo. Thanks for the correction, both the spelling and the content.

No; you can't use 120 volts adopter in a 220 volts socket, you will burn it down. There are two options for your trimmer to work, and I believe that when you go to electronic market in your city you must be able to find one of the following options.

1- check the output side of the adopter supplied with the trimmer. You will find the written information 1- (120/12 or 24 or 50 volts), 2- watts or Amperes.

Ask in the market a new adopter with 220 volts instead of 110 volts, but the watts or Ampers should be identical. Buy it go home and enjoy a nice shave.

2- If unfortunately you do not find an adopter of above specifications, ask for a step down 220/110 volts power supply, and than you can plug in this power supply in a 220 volts socket and trimmer adopter on the output side of this power supply.

you can look these things in Nehro bazar or knawt place or Paleka bazar

Both items shall cost you approximately same amount

All mobilephones & trimmers use a 5VDC & 110/220VAC chargers are available in markets and you have to change only the output plug to a proper one.

The same case is with laptops. Batteries vary almost fron ~10V~15V but chargers have ~19/20VDC with different output plugs.

And they are much cheaper than the TradeNamed ones

Using it in India on main supply will immediately burn the trimmer winding. Ready transformers for 110 to 220 Volts are available through out Delhi.

Look at the placard for the device, if it says 110/220VAC (or any resonable variation such as 100-250VAC), then you are OK. If it says 110VAC you are not.

Thanks Everyone.

For ppl with missing details . It says

INPUT : 120VAC - 60 Hz - 5W

OUTPUT 3.6VDC - 100mA

m sorry , I forgot :)

I think I'll go with a step down transformer kind of thing

I'll check out bhagirath palace. For Some reason, I don't feel like trusting those people :)

Neways, I guess I am out of options

At last we know for sure! You would definitely destroy the charger if you tried to plug it in to 220V.

The 220/120V step down transformer is probably your best choice for two reasons:

1. You may be able to use the same transformer for other 120V devices that are within the power capabilities of the transformer. Virtually any 220/120V transformer you can find will be able to handle the 5W. A heavier transformer will be useful for devices that require more power, and will only use slightly more power than a light one. Do unplug the transformer when it is not in use.

2. You may be able to find a different charger with 220V input and 3.6V output, BUT it must have the same connector AND the same polarity as the original. Positive center is most common, but definitely NOT universal. The device should have a symbol something like -C•+ to indicate polarity.

This is a simple power supply, not a charger.

You could buy one locally with 230 VAC input as long as the output is the same voltage, same polarity on the plug and at least 100ma or even a little more would be even better....it would also have the right plug on the mains side!!
