I Dropped an LED Globe Bulb?

08/24/2010 5:41 AM

I'm all for the new technology. Bought several (expensive!) new LED globe bulbs to start replacing the old incandescents. I dropped one and of course the outer globe glass shattered. Now what do I do with the rest of the bulb, which by the way looks unharmed???

I agree, after all, what are circuit breakers/fuses/fire departments for?

Although, I can say I now have a sofa that goes against the "Feng Shui" of the room to hide the serpentine pattern of a vaporized extension cord in the carpet.

Thanks Del, Picked out all the glass shards - there were many. Plugged it in and it does work.

Excellent, electronic semiconductor components are pretty rugged, it seems a bit daft to encapsulate them in delicate glass really.

So now you need a lamp shade/diffuser which hides the LED array. Ordinary photocopy/printer paper should work OK if you can't find something suitable to buy.

Naked LEDs produce high energy X-Rays...

Just joking.

Give it a shot and try it. It is probably fine. Be careful of the glass.

I was going to suggest that he wear his aluminum foil cap when he does. The signal is so much stronger without the globe!

just stick it in and see if it lights up your life. It should be fine. May get a bit hot though.

You might be able to retun it for repair.

If it still works you could glue fiber optic bundles to the LED's to create a fabulous "floral" arraignment!

My understanding is that for LED globe bulbs the outer glass bulb provides a similar light package to the incandescent bulb in that it allows easier insertion into the holder and more uniform light output. It is not necessary for the LED light to function (unlike a standard incandescent bulb).

Your LED light should work fine without the outer glass bulb, BUT before inserting it into the socket (especially a recessed ceiling socket) assess how easy it will be to remove, and take care with insertion and removal into and out of the socket (potentially sharp edges).

In the end you will need to make the call on if it is worth it.

If it don't light up, see Instructables on how to make a Jacob's Ladder using a CFL and EHT transformer.

The "globe" cover is not imperative with LED's. Just clean it up and use it in a out of the way passge or even stairwell. (Where nobody will notice that you dont want/cant replace the whole lamp) Of course if the LED dont work any more, this idea wont work

Re: I Dropped an LED Globe Bulb?

Out of curiosity, I tried to find out the degree of isolation between the LED leads (exposed behind the LED's in the bulbs I have) and the 120vac supply.

Wiki mentions a series diode, resistor and the use of "parallel strings" for LED bulbs.

Anyone have a circuit diagram?
