Conversion of 1989 York Turbopack R11 Chiller to R123

08/29/2010 11:29 PM

Hello all, I need help on where I can find information in regards to converting my 1989 York Turbopack R11 chiller to use R123 refrigerant. The series itself is OT HG 1 500 R11, compressor model LTH 67, serial number B1797066.2165. I obtained this chiller 2nd hand and am having troubles even finding a user manual since the item is so old. I noticed that York is now managed and owned by Johnson Controls. Any help on how to convert this chiller from R11 to R123 or how to obtain the user manual for this item would be greatly appreciated.

It is unlikely that it is going to be easy to convert the chiller to R123 due to its age. The issues you will have to deal with involve seal material compatibility, pump mechanical design (especially with centrifugal compressors- the volutes may not be properly dimensioned), and most likely a need to change the expansion orifice. It is a real shame that equipment like this is made redundant by questionable legal manipulations...And the fact that manufacturers would rather build you a new unit than help you keep the older unit operational for a reasonable, economically justifiable life expectancy...

It is very simple, to contact either York or Jonson controls for the manual. You have three options in the order:

1. Go for new R-134a chiller from York or anybody else. Discard this old one and be peaceful.

2. R-11 you can no longer use, so convert it for R-123 which has near similar properties like R-11 by retrofitting by changing some parts with the help of OEM. It is not less expensive. Good life is not expected.

3. Just find out suitable lubricating oil for R-123. Evacuate and vacuum the system. Fill new oil and R-123 and run it, but at about 20% reduced capacity. It may not operate at original performance level. You may encounter several other problems and life will be short.
