I missed the deadline on my last post, but, Arizona winds can become quite strong, and could blow out the flame before the desired effect is achieved. I would do this in an enclosed area, if possible.

Get this chump person to drive your truck to the store, making sure the store has surveillance cameras. Then have someone apply the product and return to the store for the "after" recording. In a flash of my google, I got that the dyes for plastic are solvent dyes. Next search included 'restoration' which led me to vinyl dye products specific to your application. And who could miss this "inside secrets" page describing and showing pictures of the restoration project that you have in mind.

Yes it's true, I have actually worked with dyes to earn a living, but never with plastic dyes so it was all new to me and pure google fruit. It took what, three minutes?

Well I chose to use "Grecian 2000" at the first signs of greyness. As a chemist, I was interested to find out why it turns hair black. The answer is that it contains LEAD ACETATE. Imagine - putting lead on your head! Plumbum crazy. In the end I decided to grow old gracefully. No reason why you shouldn't put it on your truck bed though. Apply liberally and massage in at the first sign of greyness.

I'm philosophically opposed to spray painting it.

This is going back a ways; but I have to believe the products I used 30 years ago are still available. I was building a street rod and had a set of seats and interior door panels from a similar model that had been rreupholstered in ugly green vinyl by a car upholstery shop.

I had an automotive paint store mix up some nice custom tan spray paint that was formulated specifically for application to vinyl. It went on beautifully by spraying with the same spray gun I used for the exterior acrylic laquer coats. Much easier to spray than the exterior body coats. Dried a nice low gloss just like the new died vinyl material and covered well. Prep was simple with a cleaning solvent specially for vinyl. To this day it has held up well except in one spot where it was exposed to a harsh chemical.

So I'd start my search in the places that supply professional auto body refinishers.

A better idea is to borrow the KrisDel^TM time machine...
Go back in time and remove the part in question from the van when it was new, return to the present and refit it.
This process has several benefits, by removing it when new, it will no longer be fitted when you return, thus you won't have to remove it a second time in order to re-fit.
The intervening years when it wasn't fitted will be just a distant memory which can be remedied by a few sessions of therapy.

That's a very logical thing to do. But, if I replaced them, I would be forced to replace everything back there. I can't stand shoe laces that are not tightened to the same "tightness". I could not tolerate shiny new caps on old bed liner and I not going to replace it all.

I'm going to try some dye from the local shop. Knowing that for around $100.00USD I can replace them.

The plot thickens. This vehicle has factory rail caps and no-one carries them because the top of the bed rail is stamped with square holes to accept molded in attachment "pegs".

That means that the $100.00 USD replacement cost just went to $4-500 USD at the dealer.

So, it's dye for sure.

Dunn-Edwards makes a paint called Vin-l Stripe, it is road stripping paint and as such is very durable. It comes in Black, White, Green, Osha Blue, Roadstripe Yellow and Red. It costs about $24 a gallon if I remember correctly and can be applied with a roller (though it is VERY thick).

I thought this paint was manufactured by ACME. As was the fake road tunnel paint.

I think Dunn-Edwards bought the paints and solvents division of ACME as sales began to suffer from what became known as the 'coyote effect'...

I have a pretty strong feeling, that this stuff is not going to adhere very well to plastic.

It adheres pretty well to most everything I've encountered unless it has a non-porous surface... Bed liners are usually rough enough that this shouldn't be an issue, but concern about the functionality of this solution is why I propose providing a sample since I have some old stock waiting to be disposed of...

Do you have anything similar laying around you could test it on? I'd be interested in seeing how it would work.

I'm thinking it may seem to adhere well, but if you got a corner started, you could probably peel the whole thing off.

I'd need to know exactly what his liner is made of and what condition it is in in order to do any sort of accurate testing, and I'm really not set up to do so.

it would depend on the surface being coated. Definitely adhesion to plastic can be an issue. I have peeled huge 'sheets' off the inside of plastic paint buckets. However, if properly applied (in thin coats with ample drying time between) it has excellent chipping and 'peel-up' resistance on most surfaces I have tried it on (steel, hardboard, concrete, my shoes (the constant flexing of my shoes does cause it to chip and flake off of them... they were victims of a largish spill)...). We are using it primarily as a floor paint for our stages, which are surfaced with masonite (tempered hard-board) which is very smooth and resists most paint (certainly not as severly resistent as plastic can be). In fact, when we see damage to the paint surface on our floor it is almost invariably structural (e.g. somebody taped something to the floor, when they peeled the tape up it took part of the floor beneath the paint with it) and these damages do not spread as you would expect if the paint were not well bonded to the surface.

The liner is OK.

It's the bed rail caps that have faded. My guess is that the rail caps are molded from ABS and the rest is vacuum formed PVC sheet.

I'll post a picture tomorrow of the rail cap and liner.

In that case... paint probably isn't the answer no matter how totally incredible it may be... vacuum molded plastic maybe? take your old caps and vacu-form a new surface onto them... or use them to make a mold then you can start making them out of plaster of Paris... when they break just make new ones, in fact make a few hundred at a time and just carry them in the cab so you can do quick replacements after every pot-hole or speed bump...

It's definitely a good idea to try it out on lyn's truck. That way if it fails, you won't have to look at it or deal with it.

If your material is absorbent then "Raven Oil" is the way to go. Get it from your shoe repairer. Let dry thoroughly and polish off. Do not sit on the seat in a white Panama suit for a good while because if the material has not been properly dried and polished, the oil may come off and spoil your lovely bag of fruit.

It is not merely a issue of aesthetics, I had a 1998 F-150 with black bed liner caps which faded to gray. I lost my credibility and was denied a patent award for a shoelace tensioner I was developing.

If it's just the caps, stop ar$eing about and get a BIG marker pen and do some colouring in.
You could do big smileys on the doors too.
